Hi everyone

Ive got DSL up and running and I think the myDSL tool is great but Im stuck on how to save my settings including the screen set up. Ive tried the back up tool (i wanted to use a floppy as a back up device like you can do in knoppix) but it doesnt seem to work!

Its probably something Ive missed to do! is there a easy step by step way of doing it?

Thanks for your help

did you do this: ?

open fluxbox menu (right click on your desktop)
goto system, backup/restore
type in the window (as backup-device) fd0
click on Backup

?

it will save stuff in the /home/dsl/filetool.lst file, edit it to save more stuff.

I'm having the same problem.  I'm running DSL off a usb drive and am looking to save the settings (desktop, files, etc) to the usb drive also.  Should I save them under backup/restore to fd0 too?

I believe the usb disk is sda

(just use the mount option on the side panel and check if it is reading the right place...)

I would really like to backup to the usb stick that I am running DSL from.  I can mount the stick to /mnt/sda1 and I can access it via the shell with write permission.

I have tried to backup using the app from the dsl menu and it does not give me an error if I enter either sda1 or /mnt/sda1.  It does not actually appear to do anything though :(

Where would DSL save the backup if it actually did create it?

I've got the backup/restore working on my USB pen drive, except that it doesn't save my chosen desktop theme (always defaults to the original black one).

What should I add to filetool.lst, to make it save my desktop preferences?

Thanks,
Tim

tawalker:

If your keeping your themes in /home/dsl/.fluxbox/*
( like the .tar.gz themes in the repository do when they install )

Add these lines to your filetool.lst, then backup

home/dsl/.fluxbox/backgrounds
home/dsl/.fluxbox/themes
home/dsl/.fluxbox/init

Hi ke4nt,

I don't have the 'backgrounds' or 'themes' directories (files?), but 'init' is there. Just added the full path to filetool.lst, saved and rebooted, and it remembered my choice of theme.

Many thanks! :D

My bad..
I juxtaposed the word "themes" for the correct word "styles"

When you install any of the numerous themes available in the
repository, the images are stored in the "backgrounds" dir,
while the style files are in the "styles" directory..

Backing up these 2 directories, and the init file, will keep
ALL of your installed themes backed up and available from
the menu under desktop > styles..

When using the stock DSL , only the "styles" directory exists.

Do check out some of the other themes available...

Now I've got DSL actually booting off the pen drive (VERY happy about that :D) , and have tried a couple of extra themes ('liquidglass' rocks :) ):

I've tried installing a couple of MyDSL apps, but they don't seem to get backed up to the pen drive, and are missing when I next boot into DSL. AFAICS, many MyDSL apps are installed into /opt/, and I wondered if I could just put the whole /opt/ directory tree into filetool.lst, so it would all get backed up.

Whether I have enough space left on the pen drive for this, I don't know - is there a more efficient way to make the MyDSL apps persistent?

BTW: when I reset my keyboard settings to UK via the Control Panel, which file do I have to ensure is backed up, so that the setting will be remembered?

Thanks,
Tim

No, sda1 is what you are looking for.  Or sda2, depends on your setup.

Hallo! I´m a real newbie, but rather good at PC.
I dont want to disturb my PC windows before I no a lot more
Is it possible to reach other parts of my computer, like my so far empty 4gb extra partition, a usb pen drive or my eternal harddrive(three partitions) and save or pick up things??

How do I do to make my HP PSC printer work? Is installation saved automatically?

How do I configure my adsl? Is it safe although there is awarning about changing file etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider??

One more is there a linux manual to find and download which applies to DSL?

Perotto asked:

If it is an ADSL router connected to a network card, you do not need any "setting up"

Of you have a USB ADSL modem, you need to find the linux drivers and set things up - this is not that easy :-(

My opinion is that it is easier to just go out an buy a network card for your computer.

Usually, in the USA, there is one on sale at a major retailer for under $10.00 and sometimes they are free after mail-in rebates.

Check www.salescircular.com and search under the "wired" network category for any sales in your area this week.
