I downloaded the 9.2 iso and checked the md5sum. All good. Then I burnt the cd and tried to boot it using the failsafe cheatcode ( which works in Knoppix ). It hangs at "booting kernel". I tried burns using three different burning software programs and two different burners, same problem. I even tried to boot to run level 2 and had the same problem. Not that I would know what to do in run level 2 but someone here would tell me. Any suggestions?

Sure...

What model of macintosh ( G3 or G4 ) are you trying to boot this on ?

....  just kidding ....

But it would be helpful to know WHAT boxes you have tried your CD's on.
Did your CD's bootup on any other machines ?
( that would eliminate your CD's being the issue )

What are the contents of your CD's ?

More info is needed..  ( and it doesn't boot on mac..really.. )

Box is a new Presario, 2.66 ghz Celeron, 256 megs ram, 80 gig hd, 17 in lcd screen. What else do you need to know? I'm all ears!!! I did not try booting this on any other machines. Knoppix boots in failsafe and as I stated I tried to boot to run level 2 ( which didn't work ) because if it did boot there were some suggestions on this forum that I could try, and of course you people would try to help me out. BTW I did several searches of this forum before posting.

I've been in shops not booting a few late model laptops with dsl lately, though not this Presario (my recent posts). I know your pain.

Nevertheless, assuming your burns are ok, the conventional wisdom suggests it may be worth downloading and trying a few different dsl versions.  As I understand it, I believe the last major change was at dsl 8.2.0, so maybe try a version(s) before this.

As a last resort: a laptop with this kind of grunt might run 'DSL Embedded' pretty well within WinXP.

I have heard that Knoppix favors Centrinos.  Others have said Kanotix BHX tends to be more successful on laptops.

A request: please post the model of your Presario and more cpu details if you have them (eg Celeron M whatever), together with the versions of dsl that you try, and whether you're successful or not - this will be a great help to the collective knowledge base.

PS: If you haven't already, you could check google for a specific forum for your laptop on eg < HP Notebooks > or < Notebook Review > and post there re Knoppix.

Thankyou for your input. My box is not a laptop, it is a SR1211NX Compaq Presario
I have had success running Knoppix on this machine, somehow that gets lost, as, if I understand right dsl,
is a distilation of Knoppix. Knoppix runs on this machine--- I could post this from it if I wanted to.
Sorry-- it gets lost as no-one pays attention to that fact. It works fine.
I surf this forum frequently and have used the search function to maybe no avail. Sufice it to say I am disapointed. I thought there were enthusists here.
Don't take that comment personally, you are here for me. I'll let you know how it goes
I d/l the sylinux iso. Lets see how that goes

Syslinux iso worked. Booted in failsafe, configured my eth0 connection and here I am running dsl and posting with Firefox. I am quite impressed from what little I have looked at.
Oh, I got the idea to try the syslinux iso from the laptop forum while I was surfing back a few pages. Someone had similar issues with a P4 laptop. The 5 or six searches I did never came up with that post. Go figure!!!!
