I catch on quick, but I am hanging up here. I have an old POS box, that I installed Fedora Core 2 on, but being a Pentium II and 333Mhz ad limited memory, the thing is hogging a ton of resources. So I have come to DSL. Now, my question is, how do I get rid of Core 2 and just run DSL. Posted by dh_racer on Jan. 08 2005,18:02
I am figuring eiher from tools..install to hard drive or FRUGAL Install, the problem as I see it, correct me if I am wrong, the CORE 2 app is taking up a huge amount of space.processor : 0 vendor_id : GEnuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 5 model name : Pentium II Deschutes stepping : 0 cpu MHz : 334.096 cache size : 512 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 2 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr bogomips : 666.82 Need more info? I'm a noob as well, so this is probably not the 'correct' way to do it.I have an old PII as well. So, I set up the partitions on my hardrive first, using the DSL Live CD cfdisk utility. While running the DSL Live CD, I right clicked on the desktop --> XShells --> Root Access. Then typed in cfdisk. (that works for if you only have one hard drive as it defaults to /dev/hda) I was able to see the current partitions (NTFS at the time), I deleted all partitions, then setup a Linux partition as hda1, then a swap partition (/dev/hda5, type 82 to equal the size of my RAM), then partitioned the rest of the disk with type Linux as hda6. After partitioning, I rebooted, coming up on the DSL Live CD again. Richt clicked the desktop, --> Apps --> Tools --> Install to Hard Drive. It asks the question at some point where I wanted to install to. I told it hda1. It formatted it anad did it. At the end of the install I said 'yes' to mkliloboot. It ran like a champ. Hope this answers your question. What I did blew away the Windoze stuff and the NTFS partitions. Posted by dh_racer on Jan. 08 2005,19:09
Ok, yea I was looking into how to make the partitions, b/c with Fedora it did it for me. So I assume it will wipe Fedora off, all though I have my doubts. I think once I get it going it will work like a champ, I am impressed how much better it runs than the Knoppix Live CD I also have. Thanks for your tips. Posted by dh_racer on Jan. 08 2005,19:20
what did you set your partitions too?I have three < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....;t=4074 > Posted by green on Jan. 08 2005,19:38
dh_racer,Here is what I have done. hda1 Boot Primary Linux ext2 15002.92 hda5 Logical Linux swap 254.99 hda6 Logical Linux 14756.16 I have one 30GB hard drive, and made the swap partition the same size as my RAM. I have 256MB RAM and typed it in as 256 but you can see that the partition size is just a little different, it did that on it's own. By the way, DSL does NOT need that big of a partition. 15GB is huge for DSL and quite an overkill. I just did that cuz I was in a hurry and I know that I will be blowing it away and reinstalling at some point, not because of problems but due to hardware changes that I will be making. I have run DSL on a 500MB partition in the past. I believe that you will be able to blow away your fedora core stuff by doing this. I've blown away other things doing it this way. Good luck.
