I know how to start ftp server in linux (just use start ftp)But what's the configuration of this ftp? How do I get on it from a different computer? Posted by henk1955 on Nov. 10 2004,11:24
i used the search buttom on top of this page< you could have found this yourself > Posted by tuin on Nov. 10 2004,13:02
Thx for the quick answer sorry I couldn't find it myself. Another question? If I start this ftp server I can access it from anycomputer connected to the internet. Where are the files stored that you can put on the ftp server which directory?

when you connect to the ftp server and list the directory of the ftp server. you will see the files.they are the same files you have in your $HOME directory (that is /home/dsl) so i gues that is where the files are stored. Posted by ico2 on Nov. 10 2004,13:59
i assume it is possible to change the shared folder, seems a pretty useless idea sharing your home dir for all the world to see

you can do a cd (change dir) in your ftp-client to go to an other dir.you can cd to any directry the logined in user is allowed Posted by ico2 on Nov. 10 2004,14:24

In DSL 0.8.3/0.8.4 , you can use the "add user" option from the menu. After you have created a user, try logging into your ftpserver with that userid/passwd.. You should be in that users $HOME directory. That is where I'd place files I wanted access to.. From most M$ boxes, that is the only area I can get to. From my linux box, I do have more access than just the $HOME dir. 73 ke4nt Posted by tuin on Nov. 10 2004,19:04
but since im booting from cd i can't put any files there right? Also i can get on my ftp but it show some mutella directory
Posted by henk1955 on Nov. 10 2004,20:00
now then you are looking in the /home/dsl directory.that is in a ramdisk you can write and read to it Posted by ke4nt1 on Nov. 10 2004,20:56
Yep,If your seeing the mutella directory, your in the users $HOME directory that you logged in with.. If you place FILES in that directory, you should see them just like the mutella directory.. Good work.. 73 ke4nt Posted by tuin on Nov. 11 2004,09:22

but im logging in from a windows machine? so when i Connect with the standard internet broweser and type < ftp://myipadress > and then username+password I can't type commands like cd/mnt/hda1Me a bit confused, im still a noob in linux Posted by henk1955 on Nov. 11 2004,12:23
you use ie? sorry for you!how do you upload to the ftp-server? beter use firefox, ftp from command line or another ftpclient then can navigate to other directorys but you counld make a symbolic link in the /home/dsl pointing to /mnt/harddisk_you_mounted then you can navigiate to it (even using the silly ie browser). Posted by tuin on Nov. 11 2004,13:13
Well since i have firefox already! I'll try that instead, oh and how do i make a symbolic link???

Hey i have the same problem it says "acces denied" when i try to get to my harddrive.Anyone know on this board how to solve this? Posted by bdkives on Jan. 08 2005,06:51
Yes, I had the same problem. There are two bugs in DSL 0.9.1 and earlier. DSL doesn't correctly mount an ntfs file system. For a temporary work-around and permanent fix, see:< How to get files from the hard drive using the FTP or Web server. > and < FTP bug report > for more information. |
