Hi, I am completely new to linux and would like to try it, but I do not have an extra HDD so I have read that this would work on a USB memory stick.Would I just have to download it and put it on the flash drive? And is there any danger that it would harm my Windows installation?... Would it do anything with my HDD while it's running? Thank you, John Posted by SaidinUnleashed on Dec. 20 2004,05:03
You will need to download the ISO and burn the image to a cd. Boot with the cd and use the Install to USB Pendrive item in the menu.If you have a NTFS partition, you can't do anything to your windows install, unless you know how to remount it RW and do it intentionally, if not ntfs, it will only do what you do to it. In other words, it will not harm your M$ install whatsoever. Have fun, and... Welcome to the Revolution!!! -J.P. Posted by John Paul on Dec. 20 2004,15:07
Thanks for the reply! So I won't need the "bootusb-0.8.img" for anything? And if I want my USB stick back I can just erase it? Thanks, John Posted by mpie on Dec. 20 2004,15:27

I tried burning the .iso to a CD-RW and booting but it just said "F1 to retry, or F2 to enter setup menu".Thanks, John Posted by mpie on Dec. 20 2004,15:45
use a cd-r more reliable you get less bad writes.how did you burn it did you just dump it to disk or did you burn image of?.....if using nero need to select burn image of, this unpacks the files in the iso anything else just dumps the iso to disk! Posted by John Paul on Dec. 20 2004,15:53

so re burn it with the burn image of option ...... then it should just boot the iso file itself is not bootable, need to burn the image of it extracting the files

I use BurnCDCC to burn my ISO files to CD. It's a lot easier since the only thing that the program does is burn ISO images. You can't get it wrong. Here's a link if you want to download it: < http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/utilities.html#burncdcc >

Thanks, it worked.I tried selecting install to pendrive but a window just poped up and was gone. Will it work if I just copy the folders from the CD to the USB drive? Thanks again, John Posted by cbagger01 on Dec. 20 2004,22:21
Try running the Dell USB Memory Key utility program on your pendrive before attempting the "install to pendrive" script. It is likely that the pendrive script is erroring out because your pendrive is not formattated and partitioned correctly and the utility program will fix this problem. < http://www.bay-wolf.com/utility/usb_memkey.zip > |
