I need jre-1.4.2.uci!Forum: Other Help Topics Topic: I need jre-1.4.2.uci! started by: Patrick Posted by Patrick on Nov. 16 2004,13:32
I need java 1.4.2 (uci) so that i can symlink it to Firefox 1pre. (it seems to work for henk1955 that way)We are not able to transfer this file (with a messenger) from his pc to mine due to firewalls/data-limits. This JRE/UCI file is no longer in the depository so mabye someone can show me an alternative source (ftp?) Posted by Patrick on Nov. 16 2004,14:27
Correction: i need jre1.4.2.05.uci

Does the jre1.5.0.uci work for you?It is a later version, so it should be compatible. If not, and you can't get a symlink to work, let me know. I still have the 1.4.2_05, but is will now always be superceded by the 1.5.0 or later.. 73 ke4nt Posted by Patrick on Nov. 16 2004,19:11
It doesn't work for me... (firefox crashes when i get to a java-site...)

Hmm.. are you linking to the correct file ?There are two possible files to symlink to. Another angle, what version of firefox is crashing ? Just for grins, the firefox.tar.gz, and the firefox.uci in the repository are both version 9 , and they DO work with the jre1.5.0 73 ke4nt Posted by Patrick on Nov. 17 2004,07:48
Firefox 1.0 Pre-release (gtk2-dsl), i tried all sort of jre's (uci/dsl/tar.gz) and all versions available (from the depository). I've got lots of extensions active in FF10pre, could they be messing up the link to java? (i backup my changes in the system to backup.tar.gz and restore it when booting). I am thinking of starting the system (from my usb-pen/frugal install) without restoring backup.tar.gz just to see if it changes something.

I just booted dsl 084 clean (norestore) with Firefox10pre.dsl and symlinked java (1.5) with ~/.mozilla/plugins (tried 2 different locations when symlinking). Both didn't work! What am i doing wrong? (i symlink with emelfm but there also seems to me a way to do it with commands i hear?) Could this make a difference?

I just installed opera 6.12 (dsl) and added the path to java 15 AND IT WORKS. Not that i want to start using opera now, i really need to be able to use java with firefox10pre! Posted by Patrick on Nov. 17 2004,09:05
last chance:I used: (from xterm) cd ~/mozilla/plugins ln -s /opt/jre1_5_0/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_0ji.so No sigar... Posted by ke4nt1 on Nov. 17 2004,13:12
Thanks for your posts...I followed up your request by testing several ways, here's my steps.. Started up a pristine 0.8.4 disk. Opened emelfm Loaded "gtk2.dsl" with "mydsl" button in emelfm .. Loaded Firefox-1.0PR.dsl with "mydsl" button in emelfm .. Started Firefox , went to "yahoo games" , tried Text Twist .. Got message about needing to download plugin - no problem .. Exit Firefox .. Mounted the jre1_5_0.uci with "mydsl" button in emelfm .. Again started Firefox , went to "yahoo games " , tried Text Twist .. Played a game , did lousy .. Exit Firefox .. UNMounted jre1_5_0.uci with "mydsl" button in emelfm .. Loaded jre1_5_0.tar.gz with "mydsl" button in emelfm .. Again started Firefox, went to "yahoo games" , tried Text Twist .. Didn't bother to play this time .. So it seems to work fine here... I did not have to create any "symlinks" , as the built-in, existing ones work fine. I did repeat this with my usual restored backup , and mydsl path .. No problems .. I run from liveCD, so I have no issues with leftovers from previous installs .. The symlink path should connect from: A symlink in /opt/Firefox-1.0PR/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so .. which points to: The /opt/jre1_5_0/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so file .. Do NOT use the ns7-gcc29 , as it is for earlier browser builds built on the older gcc29 compiler. Most everything new is now built with gcc 3.x .. For example , the ns7-gcc29 DOES work with Opera, as you have seen .. I believe it also works with the older Firefox 0.8 series as well .. 73 ke4nt Posted by Patrick on Nov. 17 2004,14:38
I finaly got it working (deleted ~/mozilla! :-( ) and now it works...I am happy though, thanks for the info! (now i need to start installing my FF-extensions/bookmarks/preferences again) Posted by Patrick on Nov. 18 2004,10:23
I finaly know now what i was doing wrong.... (i have got it all running smoothly now!)I have an firefox extension running (agent switcher) which makes jave/ff crash whenever i go to a site with active java. (because FF then simulates that it's THE INTERNET EXPLORER). I removed it and now it all works fine.. |
