i am using the poorman's install booting from a disk. i installed a java prog but after i reboot it was gone. where did it go?how can i keep it there without it disappering after reboot? i just installed this dsl, so any help or links to expain would be appreciated. thanks Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 12 2004,16:15
I think (not sure, though) that the poorman's install works much the same as running a liveCD. You're simply running from an ISO image, yes? So any applications you install are being installed into ram. You will probably need to backup those applications and restore when you boot up.As I said, I'm not positive about this...I'm a liveCD user with DSL. Posted by tzz on Aug. 13 2004,02:41

TO backup....The backup utility uses the "/home/dsl/filetool.lst" as the list to draw from when creating your backup. Edit this file with scite, and add the locations of the files you want to keep. To make a backup, first decide where you want to backup to.. Floppy, a ext32 or fat16/32 partition on your HD, usb key, etc... Then use your menu to goto "system, file restoration, specify device" and enter the location of a partition ( it uses a floppy automatically, so no need to enter it, remember only 1.44MB ) Then use the menu option, goto "system, file restoration, backup" You will see the backup copying files in a shell window.. Press enter to continue when your done.. This is only for backing up settings, bookmarks, mail, etc.. If you want to backup programs, you'll need a LARGE backup space. If you install a DSL extension from the myDSLgui icon on your desktop, you'll find the extension in your /tmp directory. You can backup this file by copying it onto a HD partition/usb key, etc.. You will need to re-install it after a reboot, with the mydsl button in emelfm, but you won't need to redownload it again.. If you are installing from apt-get or another source, the livecd environment may not be for you, as there is not any simple way to backup a program you have installed into the filesystem.. Try a HDInstall. 73 ke4nt Posted by tzz on Aug. 13 2004,04:35

if you put the extention in the root of your disk, it will automaticly load a boottime, so no need to re-install. if you have a poorman's install, put the extentions in the root and use the backup/restore automaticly at shutdown/boot, you have a system that looks much like a "real" install. But it is far more easier to update to a new DSL version and you can add or remove extentions withouth problems. |
