how to boot cd if there are other files on it?Forum: Other Help Topics Topic: how to boot cd if there are other files on it? started by: aveline Posted by aveline on July 15 2004,07:21
hi getting sick of me yet?OK I have 0.7.2 & it runs great...tyvm I can make a CDRW installation CD out of the ISO just fine. Ditto a CDR. My problem is thus: I want to add some .pdf's to the cd so I can peruse them w/out havin to swap cds. Whenever I've made a CDRW installation CD though, it won't even try to boot. so far i've tried: - put pdfs in to a separate folder on the root dir, IE: Files are in this order: Knoppix, lost+found, index.html, then a PDF folder. - tried to put the pdfs directly on the root dir of the cd - full erasing or quick erasing seems to make no difference before a burn. If what i'm trying to do is not feasible what method can I use to swap the DSL CD for a CD with just PDFs on it? I tried this in EMELFM but I couldn't get it to work, even if I use the "toram" option (i always use it btw) its not allowing me to swap the cds & read the PDF one. I'm truly stumped because my other copy of DSL 0.7.1 is on CDRW too! I believe I even tried burning to a diff cdrw and still no dice. Yet 0.7.1 works great off cdrw? WTF? to say I'm frustrated is a mild understatement. thx aveline ps I'll stop being a pita & help ppl out here (did lots of tech support while I was on a dev team for a video games MOD...and I'm happy to contribute to DSL however I can if volunteers are needed. Till then, um can some kind soul gimme a break? sigh Posted by cbagger01 on July 15 2004,16:55
Check out this thread for details on recreating a bootable ISO and burning it to CD-R.Specifically the post by user mikshaw: < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....mkisofs > Posted by Steve KC2GOG on July 20 2004,02:12
I wan tto do the same as the origianl poster to this topic.I plan on putting DSL 7.02 on a 210MB mini CD, but it seems such a waste fo a CD , i wnat to put other files on it, such as mp3's and PDf's How can i put these extra files on the CD, but still allow it to boot. When i make an ISO, if i add files to it, it wont boot any more, and if i try to add files to the CD first, and then make the CD a bootable it wont allow me to burn it I looked at the suggestion in the post above me , but did not seem to address the problem, Help would be appreciated, flames are not appreciated, just so you know in advance =) Posted by ke4nt1 on July 20 2004,04:08
A little more info from you would be helpful, Steve...What platform are you using to create your iso ( Linux or Windows ) ? Are you opening the .iso file, adding files and directories, then recreating the .iso? Or, are you trying a multisession burn to your cdr? Search the forums for "multisession" and "remastering" Methods are available for both platforms... When I want to make a custom cdr, I have several ways of doing it. Burn your DSL 0.7.* .iso file to the cdr using a multisession option ( linux doesn't always handle this elegantly, windows burn programs do ) Burn it using a session-at-once/disk-at-once mode, leaving the disk open. Then burn a second session to the cdr with your files and folders in it. Close (finalize) this session, and try using the disk to bootup DSL. Always works for me... You need a multisession compatible cdr drive... Most are.... There is some discussion about boot issues with 0.7.2. Best to try using 0.7.1 for now..It is proven and well tested. There are also programs like Ultraiso for windows that will let you "open" the .iso file, add files and directories, and rewrite the .iso Then burn the new image as usual.. No multisession burns required. These are really sweet, and easy to use.. Nice for a quick custom .iso All of these options are also available in your cdrecord package in Linux. If your familiar with it, you can use it in combination with mkisofs to generate new .iso files, and burn single or multisession discs.. Burning a cdr with any of these methods should not cause any "boot" problems. They work just like a pristine DSL build. Again , a wealth of info is in the forums about this, as it is a popular topic here at DSL.. Rather than switch distros, we just build our own, using DSL as the base. Small or large, thin or packed full... it's your build.. Enjoy 73 de Kent ke4nt Posted by Steve KC2GOG on July 20 2004,23:46
most helpfull, ill post back when i give it a try, OS's available to me at the time is either winXP (both flavors) and RH8. tnx Steve Posted by ke4nt1 on July 21 2004,02:36
While using the tools in RH8 or DSL would be the "Cool Geek" thing to do and learn, the tools available for XP are the easiest of the three to grasp and be effective on for someone starting to explore burning custom .iso files or multisession burns..IMHO 73 de Kent ke4nt |
