Hi Gang, I am running Sylpheed, but I find the menu fonts (not the actual message fonts, but the menus themselves: File, Edit, etc.) are uncomfortably small. Is there a way to increase them? Are there some specific Xresources for this? Actually, I note that many of the applications use the same (too small!) font for menus and dialogs. Is there a common place where a "default font" for the whole system gets set? Presumably if I could change that, I could get them all at once? Thanks!

yes
you can configure gtk and fluxbox
to use any fonts you like

google for .gtkrc
and for fluxbox / blackbox styles

you might try editing .gtkrc in your home dir
and put a # in front of
include "/usr/share/themes/Default/gtk/gtkrc"
then restart the window manager

you might try putting something like this:
style "user-font"
{
fontset="-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-14-*-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1"
}
widget_class "*" style "user-font"

in the .gtkrc file
or 16 or 18  (is bigger than 14)

and you can edit the fluxbox styles
or download new ones

you can copy some styles you like from
/usr/share/fluxbox/styles
to the .fluxbox/styles dir in your home dir
and rename them ... like LemonSpace2
and edit them

try putting something like
*Font: -adobe-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-*-*
at the bottom of the style file
you may need to delete other lines with font references

if you are using a 1024x768 you might prefer 800x600
try starting the cd with the screen=800x600 option

someone could create a nice easy-to-read
fluxbox style and gtk style and post it ...

just as an experiment
i changed my .gtkrc file (in my home dir) to

#include "/usr/share/themes/Default/gtk/gtkrc"

and i copied the file Operation in /usr/share/fluxbox/styles
to the .fluxbox/styles dir in my home dir

and i changed all the lines with
lucidasans-10
to
lucidasans-12

then i selected that style to use

it makes a fairly nice, readable style
with fairly large menu fonts
i think i'll keep it this way, for a while ...

Thanks, this did the trick! I edited .gtkrc. added the user-font widget, and right away, all was well. Excellent! Thanks!

Thanks Guest.

I hadn't thought of that,  but changing from 10 to 12 in the style file was all I needed and  is a great improvement.

Now changing the rest of my custom styles :)

many linux distros seem to have fonts that are too small
not just hard to see for people with less-than-perfect vision
but not enough pixels to display the fonts properly

i learned a bit about this when i tried
a kde theme in mandrake
and i couldn't read the font in gaim anymore
the font was about 2 pixels high

i find most distros look better
if you just tweak the font size

if you like bigger fonts
you might like the fonts in dillo bigger too

i edited the dillorc file
(in the .dillo dir in your home dir
click the H top left so you can see hidden files)
and took out the # in front of
font_factor=1.2

makes slashdot easier to read ...
