Hello,

I am trying to set up my dsl as an ftp server or recover some data from a probably damaged ntfs HD.

What I'd like to do is FTP get (from a win2k client) the important files from the mounted hda partition.

win2k <---- ftpget ----- DSL

Well the problem is that if I ftp login as "damnsmall" user I transfer the data but all files have 0kB size, as the user had no permission to read the files.
I tried login by ftp as root but doesn't work.

I'm now doing a winscp of the file but i want to understand my problem.

How can I allow root t do an ftp login? Any hint to solve this problem?

Thank you!
Bye Chris

Moving this to a more appropriate area.

1. It sounds like you are using a very old version, especially if you are seeing the user "damnsmall". That means it's a VERY old release. Please grab the latest version, so that we know everyting is working as it should be.

Once you get the latest version, follow these steps.

Boot DSL on the dead Windows box. Mount the appropriate partition.

Open an xterm and set the password for user "dsl" to whatever you want

Code Sample
sudo passwd dsl

Open the DSLPanel and start the ftp server by clicking the betaftpd button.

Go to the computer that you are wanting to save stuff from the dead Winbox to and use a FTP client to access the DSLbox.

Code Sample
ftp://dsl:<password here>@dslbox.ip.goes.here

Pull anything you need across the lan! You will need to cd to the appropriate directory in /mnt of course.
