My appologies in advance if this turns out to be the noobiest question ever, and if the answer is screaming at me in the face while pokeing me with a cattle prod and pouring salt in my wounds. Here it goes: I downloaded dsl to get a feel for what linux was like and see if i wanted to use linux instead of windows.I downloaded it throgh bittorrent and burnt it to a disk as a .iso image file useing alcohol 120%. DSL boooted up fine, but when i tried to click on the browser(that i belive starts up when dsl is first ran?) nothing happened. the only thing i could do was scroll up and down on the page (useing pg up and pg down buttons). Any help? Plz? Posted by Nonamer475 on Oct. 31 2005,00:25
plz help, anyone.

Try running the "xsetup.sh" command, choosing a different mouse protocol, then restart X ("exit" from the menu and then type in "startx").

tried, failed.

Huh. Why? Did you boot with the dsl xsetup option to run xsetup.sh, or are you saying it failed because you had no mouse to get to the menu? You can get out of X by hitting <CTRL><ALT><DEL> and then try running xsetup.sh in that terminal as well. I assume that you listened to mikshaw's advice and exited and restarted the window manager. If you use <CTL><ALT<DEL>, you need to type startx to restart the window manager. What kind out mouse do you have? Does it have a wheel? Is it a USB mouse? Is it a PS2 mouse? There are lots of mice to choose from in xsetup. Posted by mikshaw on Oct. 31 2005,14:54
oh, i forgot....no mouse, no easy access to the menu. my bad.

If the keyboard is working, you can still use the xsetup menu.Just use the UP and DOWN arrow keys and the ENTER key to make your selections. Posted by Nonamer475 on Nov. 01 2005,04:02

I did an install (boot from floppy) on a Compaq p200 with a cordless USB mouse and it worked fine when I booted but after I ran xsetup it stopped working. This is my wifes machine running win 98 and I was only using DSL to get the USB burner to work so I didn't fool around with it too much. It did work though at the start and was recognized by DSL at startup. When you start up is the mouse recognized as a cordless USB mouse? Posted by AwPhuch on Nov. 02 2005,21:58
no but in xsetup.sh it will ask you if you have a usb mouse...so setting it that way should work Brian AwPhuch Posted by brianw on Nov. 03 2005,00:33
Brian, It worked "straight out of the box" when I did it. I probably set ps/2 or something when I ran xsetup.sh. All I wanted at the time was to change the resolution and I had another (ps/2) mouse hooked up as well so I did not worry about it. But the usb cordless mouse worked right off the bat untill I made the changes myself. What I am hoping to find out from Nonamer475 is if the USB mouse is recognized at startup because if he can't get it to work it may be that it is not getting recognized and not being added as a device. Do other USB devices work when you use DSL? Try Downloading USBView.dsl and install that. When you run USBView you can see that your HUB is recognized and what devices are attached. It seems to work well with my usb pen drive, and i do think it reconized my mouse, but still nothing. As to usb view, I don't think it will work (no mouse buttons remember?). I tried my liveCD on a computer at school and it worked fine with a optical ps/2 mouse.

What brand of mouse do you have? The mouse works under another OS or on another system? Does your mouse have connect buttons (button on the receiver and a little indent to push on the mouse)? If your mouse works under another OS have you done a search on yahoo/google/etc... for issues with your mouse and linux? Do you have access to a ps/2 mouse for testing? The mouse I used is from a dell system, not sure of the specific brand. If your mouse is being recognized it should be displayed around the autoconfig line (or close to it) at boot up.
