I was able to get a printer working on a gigafast print server.  These are
inexpensive small servers that connect to the printer using usb cable and to the
network with an ethernet connection.  I could not get this to work using the
aspfilter base package
for installing printers on DSL.  Instead I used MyDSL to install the cups.dsl extension.
If you want to pursue this we should move the discussion to the MyDSL Apps
forum as requested by the morderators.

I didnt have any trouble printing to that exact same print server with the exact same canon printer.

unfortunately i used Yast CUPs configuration tool

however
here are the settings you will need

TCP IP (Direct Network Prining)
enter the IP address of you print server

Printer on parallel port 1
Port 9100

Printer on parallel port 2
Port 9101

Printer on parallel port 3
Port 9102

Then select the Printer driver canon LPB-1000
(dont fall for what i did and look for Print server Drivers its just a router.)

Try this:

/usr/sbin/lpadmin -p LaserJet -E -v socket://11.22.33.44 -m
laserjet.ppd

Replace LaserJet with Deskjet, replace socket # with your printserver address, and laserjet.ppd with Deskjet.ppd

Then go back to CUPS and find driver for your printer.

I can print a test page, but thats all. No app will print. Still looking around
