I have installed DSL 2.2b on an old laptop, it's GREAT!
NEC 5080X laptop
Pentium MMX 233MHz
48mb RAM
6gb HD

I noticed the version included with DSL 2.2b is xpdf 1.00,
getting a bit old.

How can I install prettier fonts?
Will it bring my measly system to a crawl?
How can I install the newer xpdf?
I tried apt-get as user dsl and root, command not found.
Can I go grab the binary from the xpdf page?

I'm using firefox now, it's not blazing but works!

thanks for any advice!!!!!!

Installing a newer version is not likely to change the look of fonts.  If you are interested in the antialiased look (with truetype or open type fonts) that is present in most of the mainstream distros, i'd recommend installing xfree86.  I'm not sure if that's all you'll need, to be honest....might need some additional freetype files as well.
