Sorry about that dumb question, but i really need to know what command i should use.I've googled it/searched the forum/FAQ and found nothing. Can someone please explain it? I've tried run firefox open firefox nothing works. there are no icons on the desktop. Thanks Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on July 16 2006,23:22
- by default DSL boots with icons on the desktop.- check the md5 of the downloaded iso - verify you have burned the iso correctly - Use the menu to re-enable a full desktop w/ icons Perhaps you meant you disabled the icons, the command to run firefox would be 'firefox' in console afaik. What are your system specs? If you don't have that much ram you might not get icon's on the desktop as well.

And if you don't have enough ram to display icons, you definitely don't have enough to run firefox.

I've downloaded the latest version of DSL; the checksum is ok; today i've burned the iso again; How can I use the menu to re-enable the icons? I didn't see any option. I'm using the live CD and there are no icons on the desktop(really). I have 512MB ram. Also "firefox" command(without the quotation marks) doesn't work. Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on July 18 2006,01:04
Then something is very wrong...Could you describe in detail what you did at the beginning (i.e. starting from what you downloaded) to get to this point with DSL? Also, do other operating systems work as expected on this system? Posted by brianw on July 18 2006,01:14
To run firefox from the menu Right Click go to Net then Browsers and select Firefox. To display icons Right Click go to Setup go to Desktop select Icontool When the icontool opens the first tab has a selection for Display Icons. Posted by newuser on July 18 2006,18:27
Ok,step by stepI've created a txt document with 5dc742bee16b290e841b7837201695fd dsl-3.0.1.iso and saved on the desktop(same location of the downloaded iso). I've used a program...MD5CheckSum ( www.md5summer.org ) to verify, clicked on "verify sums" button. Next,it shows a dialog box without any error. My Windows XP is working properly..but anyway..Now,using Nero Express ,"what would you like to burn?" I choose "disk image or saved project". Everything works fine. I reboot my system and in the DOS screen(before the Windows black and white bar),i press F8 and choose boot from the CD drive. I press enter. A box appears: "Damn Small Linux setup routine: choose your prefered screen resolution". I choose 800x600. "Choose your preferred color depth". I select 32 bit. "Choose the number of mouse buttons". i select 3 buttons. The distro loads and shows a penguin desktop wallpaper, a taskbar, but no icons. Right clicking on the desktop, app>net, the options are Tiny IRC,Naim, glinks, xfmail, axy ftp,vnc viewer and monkey web server. There is no Fx shortcut. Am i doing something wrong? Right clicking going to app->net does not sound right.Try this Right Click got to System->System Stats When the window opens it should be on the cpu tab (if it is not select the cpu tab). At the top the DSL version will be listed. Please make sure it is the correct version. It sounds like your version is older. You can also try to find firefox manually. Right Click got to Shells (or Xshells) and open a shell. In the terminal that opens type sudo find / -name "*irefox*" and see where firefox is listed. There should be one like /usr/local/bin/firefox try running that in the shell window. Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on July 19 2006,02:54
brianw: he verified the md5, so the version he got _should_ be correct. Maybe he just inserted an old cd. (I thought glinks was taken out.. and there's nirc used instead of tiny irc)maybe he should try looking in dmesg or other logs for some hints... after verifying his version. Right click on the desktop to get a menu.Click on "System." Click on "Control Panel." Click on "Xvesa." Click on your choice of screen resolution. This should give you a nice screen with icons, does for me at least. Posted by brianw on July 20 2006,19:34
Just as an after thought. Are there any tar error messages during the boot process (can't write to filesystem)?
Posted by newby on July 21 2006,11:43
Not that I recognize. I'm still making the typical newbie mistake of attempting to write to a drive that I have not yet mounted. Posted by newuser on July 21 2006,15:58
System stats, etc doesn't exist on my DSL.Anyway, thank you all. I'll try to burn another DSL version. syslinux.iso |
