I'd like to install wine to my old laptop running DSL (Dell, 366 mhz, 4gb hd, 64 mb ram).

I've searched all over for help without success. (WineHQ, this forum, google, etc)

One major obstacle is that I don't have internet access on the laptop.

I have a .deb file and a .tar.gz file of wine. Which should I use?

Also, how would I get other apps running under MyDSL (without an internet connection)?

Just use prepackaged ones in mydsl

see damnsmalllinux.org > downloads > mirror > mydsl

no internet access on the laptop is not too difficult to surmount. Just visit the 'downloads' section of the DSL website, choose a server, and browse the /mydsl directories. It's a little cumbersome, since any given app may be in one of 3-4 different places (a 'networking' app could show up under 'apps' or under 'networking' or under 'uci' or 'unc', for example). Then download and get them to the laptop by some means, putting them into a top-level /mydsl or /mydsl/optional on one of your partitions. Point DSL there with the boot option mydsl=hda2 (or whatever).

Assuming your .tar.gz of wine is a DSL extension, try that. Those made-for-DSL extensions are nearly always better than the more generic .deb packages. If the .tar.gz is a generic source or binary tarball, then get one of the DSL packages.

Once you have the thing loaded, just do

/path/to/wine /path/to/windows-app

and it does a reasonable job of setting itself up, making a pseudo windows directory in your home dir. You may need to add some fonts to it, or possibly symlink to your windows fonts (It'll need to see the basic TTF's )

Of course it's hit-and-miss with windows apps. People do run quite complex things with wine, but it does depend on just *how* the application is complex.

Thanks for the replies.

Before reading these two posts, I halfway figured it out last night. (Well, I made progress, anyway). Here's what I did:

I copied the wine.dsl file to the /root folder. (Total guess)

I ran this wine file from the root command prompt. (It sent me through an exact Windows style setup - I set it up in the C:/Program files folder - how does that work? It showed a Z:/ drive, which appeared to be my Linux partition, should I install it to my Linux partition next time?)

I copied ybkfull.exe to the /root folder. (This is a text reader by Space Jock - he says it works in wine)

I typed wine <path to ybkfull.exe> and successfully opened up the text reading program and it worked fine.

However, I don't think it will work again unless I go through every step I just mentioned. Is there a way to get an icon I can double click, or some gui I can set up to make running it easier? I remember reading something in the wiki about creating icons.

You'll have to download a interface/gui to interact with wine (or develop one) since I do not think wine comes with one.

Unless you just want to wine that certain exe, just put that command in the shortcut.
