Since I use DSL everyday, its very important I have flash player plugin for FF. However, I downloaded and installed the latest flashplayer, to the T. However In FF I still get the "You need to install plugins" message. I went over too whatsmyip.org and it said I have the flash plugin for FF after I ran the check. Im using FF 1.0.6, as DSL won't let me install 2.0

Did you install flash 7?  Some sites require flash 9 (which I hear isn't too stable yet, and requires gtk2)

I installed the newest one on the site. 9 I think.

You'll need to install gtk2 if you want to use flash 9.
A future version of Opera might support flash 9 without needing gtk2, but at this point it seems that you need firefox+gtk2 (although it's still not entirely stable even then)

Okay, got it working, but now like every minute, FF is crashing. Wtf.

Use flash 7.  If you search the forum, Robert posted a link where it can still be downloaded.  I've had no problems with flash 7 and FF 1.0.6.

I've noticed more and more video links that require flash 9.  Anybody find a stable solution using firefox?

EDIT: Just found this tidbit:

"The features and updates added to Flash Player utilize technology in the latest operating systems for performance, functionality, and efficiency. These subsystems are not found in the older operating systems. Additionally, the manufacturers will no longer fix issues in these operating systems, making it impossible to address Flash Player issues with root causes in the operating system."

If they really are that concerned about security, I would recommend curtailing support for MS os, and writing ONLY for linux.  I'll email them immediately.

You won't get too far with that idea considering the ratio between Windows users and Linux users, and Adobe still makes their money by selling their software and services. Support the open source solution to Flash if you want something that's going to (eventually) work well in Linux:

I would recommend that video sites dump Flash altogether. It has always been bloated and unstable, and just about any browser that supports it also supports embedded video.

I took your suggestion and spent a few hours building source code to arrive at libgnashplugin.so. Unfortunately, now nothing loads...think I'll go back to flash 7....

(I built everything but the test libs).

I too installed adobe flash 9, and yes it crashes frequently, but an even more annoying problem is the lack of sound for all flash films.

At both youtube.com and newgrounds.com, often times a movie will play fine but their won't be any sound!> This is all with flash 9 and Firefox 1.06.

Any thoughts?

See the requirements - are you using alsa?
Posted by lone wolf on July 31 2007,00:00
Uhm...not unless it comes with DSL, which I assume it does not. I checked the repository, but Alsa has a bunch of listings. Which one am I supposed to install?
Posted by lucky13 on July 31 2007,00:29
Read the info files and see. It looks like alsa.dsl is the most recent.
Posted by jpeters on July 31 2007,01:57
My hunch is it's going to take a lot more than alsa drivers...

In that case, how do I uninstall Flash 9 so I can install Flash 7? Or will the installation process for Flash 7 automatically overwrite Flash 9?

Just replace libflashplayer.so  and flashplayer.xpt in the .mozilla/plugins folder.

I just realized that roberts link in the Multimedia section no longer directs to Flash 7. So, where can I get Flash 7?
