How do I remove unwanted programs from a DSL hard drive install?  I don't want/need xMMs, VNCviewer, etc.  Thanks!

Manually.

You could create some scripts (some remastering-related threads have this - but may not be the same since I'm assuming you're using a traditional debian-style hd-install).  Not sure if apt-get remove works (at least, probably not all apps)

Mikshaw was working on a script to remove apps - see his thread in the Programming & Scripting section.

Ideas re apps that were installed as debian packages eg xmms:

Code Sample
~# dpkg -l xmms
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name           Version        Description
+++-==============-==============-============================================
ii  xmms           1.2.8-2        Versatile X audio player that

~# dpkg -L xmms
# this lists all the file owned by xmms

# If apt-get remove xmms or dpkg -r xmms won't work (haven't tried it) you could go through and carefully check and consider for possible removal each of the files listed by dpkg -L xmms

This might get complicated where one package is the dependency of another etc.
