Hello, how can I view animated gif's from the command line?

I tried Feh, xZGV, GQView, and GTKSee and they don't work.

-Thanks

Animations in gif files are, for some reason I don't understand, not supported by practically every Linux image viewer I've tired. That's general image viewers I'm talking about, not specifically animated gif viewers. I think xnview is one that will display the animation, and it is available in the uci section of mydsl.

The "animate" command (part of imagemagick) will show the animation, but it is kind of crappy.

There are a few applications that are made specifically for viewing animated gifs, such as gifview, and I'm sure you can find the others with an internet search.

Just for the forum record, gifview was just submitted to testing. It's a 40kb gif viewer and displays animations just great.

I'm always surprised no-one seems to have heard of xnview.uci

Code Sample
xnview goatlovin.gif

It plays animated gifs and does myriad format conversions and image transformations as well.

Or you can always open an animated gif in Firefox.

EDIT:  mplayer can play animated gifs, but needs libungif support.
I'm not sure my old mplayer-1.0pre8 uci has that.  Not sure about other mplayers in the repo.

Ok, that's one to Mikshaw!

I thought I read the thread properly - clearly I didn't, sorry.

I'd prefer to think it's eyesight rather than old age  ...

The two are often related =o)

I think it's not friendly to tiling window managers. When I run gifview -a file.gif I get a grid of multiple copies of the image instead of one window =o(

I'll add gifview to my "float" list and see if that fixes it.

I've only tested under Jwm and Xfce. Sorry to hear it isn't usable with tiling ones.
