My vb apps use microsoft dll's to run.  Is there a similar Linux application I could rewrite the vb apps in?  It would be nice to find a development software that runs on both Linux and Microsoft operating systems that way a compiled code would run on both.

VB is made specifically for Windows...I'm not going to say you can't, but I really doubt it.

Actual programming languages are more suitable for developing cross-platform....C++ for example.

you could try java.
or one of the cross-platform scipting-languages like: python, tcl, ruby, lua..

I heard Kylix is pretty similar to VB...
In an old magazine article (dunno if the link still works) i get: < http://www.borland.com/kylix/index.html >

Try that!
