Continued from the SCREENSHOTS, SCREENSHOTS, SCREENSHOTS thread..This one is in need of a 12" speaker. My younger brother took it out for his stereo 20 or so years ago, not knowing it was a field coil unit.. It's got the green "Cat's Eye" for a tuning indicator. Range is 5-18MHz SW , and the AM band. - built-in loop antenna. I ended up with it.. it's beautiful when polished and waxed. circa 1948 .. I even found some ad copy on it from 1948 .. ( national geographic, I think ) 73 ke4nt Posted by WoofyDugfock on Nov. 27 2004,12:23
I too have a weakness for the warm loveliness of old radios.Ahhh .. God bless the thermionic valve, as beautiful a creation as the steam locomotive. Posted by hasty on Nov. 28 2004,15:36
Nothing beats the sound of valves.....still regret having to sell my Quad valve amps when a student Posted by ryptyde on Dec. 04 2004,20:41
Here's a shot of my Magnavox that was salvaged from a similar scenario of a younger sibling removing speakers(2) for a stereo project.I replaced the missing speakers with one from an organ donor(Philco) and enjoyed many hours listening in on SW and using White's Radio Log for a reference. The radio was picked up at a resale shop in the late 60's. WoW! You have the FM addon.. cool.. I saw that option in the pages I found for my model.. Does it work well? I found one at e-bay, but it was w.a.y. to pricey for me. But always in search of that feature.. Did your organ speakers work OK ? ( old philcos ) any modifications to make them work? I still have one original speaker in there, but need 1 more. 73 ke4nt Posted by ryptyde on Dec. 05 2004,02:17
The Philco speaker worked good. I recall I had to pay close attention to matching the impedance of the coils.I think that a resistor was added in series with the field coil so not to add too much of a load to the power supply. I have not powered up this radio in quite a while but may give it a try soon.I did use it frequently at one time and the AM/FM/SW worked well. There is a compartment that opens on the top/left where a phonograph was/could of been installed. The cabinet design resembles yours also, when I first saw it I thought it was mine Posted by ke4nt1 on Dec. 05 2004,02:58
Likewise...The one I have does have the turntable in it, and still runs steady.. I''ll send pics of it , and the 2 lb tonearm! "What a lathe!" 73 ke4nt |
