Please test and feedback on the following new extensions...Many, many more to come.. Looks like a great month to be running DSL ! Remember to send in your .info files and md5sums.. I've no extra time to chase down authors/versions/websites right now... will you start sorting them into categories soon? its quite confusing already >.< at least "games" and "apps"
Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 08 2004,15:51
Probably not, for now....Perhaps that will change when we are dealing with several hundred extensions, not several dozen... For now, we continue to improve the current filelists by adding features like sorting by date or alphabetically, and giving each file a "rating" .. With these tools, it's fairly easy to find what your lookin' for, either by name or by date if you are searching for an extension that has been updated ... Themes are usually green level... Many small apps can usually be pushed to /opt, and become green level... DSL system files are usually blue... Small apps can usually be found as yellow... The biggies are usually red level, due to the number of files they overwrite... There is some thought on adding a "category" column... G=games T=themes S=System file C=compressed iso M=multimedia etc.. It would be easy to add to the .info files.. then have the list sort by category. Many new linux users find the often strange filenames difficult to recognise. The .info files are there to help identify a package. Perhaps a category column would help with this... 73 ke4nt Posted by chibiace on Aug. 08 2004,16:02
add the columns then sounds like a good idea. i also had this problem with whitebox which wouldnt add anymore icons to the desktop, perhaps i have an old version. its still in testing though. amsn works good. Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 09 2004,04:37

I got Blurfish to work. Sox installed, but I didn't know what to do with it. I'm assuming command line use only for processing sound files. I can't remember if I mentioned that I got the prev. release of amsn.dsl to work. The one from 8/03/04. Looks like I need to remaster again to get the new stuff. I was going to test Quake on the laptop over the weekend, but I realized I was having ram problems. Couple of notes for the MyDSL Extensions pages. 1) You may want to make a not in the Freebirth.dsl .info page that sound must be working before loading this .dsl file. Same goes for barrage, linpsk, sweep and sox. 2) You may want to make it clear in the .info pages that linpsk, twlog, xastir are all Ham Radio apps. Some say something in the description on the extensions page, but you might want it clear both there and in teh .info file. This could save bandwidth of people loading it to see what the heck it is and then realizing they can't or wouldn't ever use it. Just a thought. 3)The category idea would be great and like you said, put only a single letter in there for sort with a key at the top of the page. That way we could get all the games, sound apps, utilities, themes together. Probably better to do this now before the page gets too huge. 4) Certain apps that run from the command line only (CLI), you might want to make that clear in the docs. This will save some questions in the forums and we could just point people to the .info page or to the original notice of the package's creation. 5) For certain apps like Quake 2 that require several steps to get them to work, such as copying .pak files and changing permissions, include the specific directions needed. Again to reduce forum questions and have a common, easy to find place to point. Thanks for removing the xscreensaver app from the stable area as it was fubar. I'm off to remaster again. Fun, fun, fun. Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 09 2004,17:18
Give the revised xscreensaver a try.. It's in testing..I took mpie's build, and reduced it to just the no-gnome - x versions. Seems to work fine on my box, as swirls greeted me this morning. Many of your ideas are excellent.. Time is my master, as I 'd love to spend more time with the .info files, and make them all more descriptive... but... For now, I'm happy just to get them included with the contribs... 73 de Kent ke4nt Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 11 2004,05:13

OK, new test results. The order will seem weird until you realize I sorted by date on the repository page, printed it and I'm using it as a checklist. Bluefish - works usbview - works blast - works falling tower - works wmtictactoe - works altitude-theme -works striking-theme - works blender223 - works gtksee5.2 - works gtkfind - works aria - works d4x - works snake - works new amsn - works dreaming-theme - works xfishtank - works hexxagon - works pipenightdreams - works xfireworks - works xscreensaverGTK - works easytag (from somebody's website) - works audacity (from ke4nt1's site) - no worky xvc - don't think this works Time to remaster w/ more new stuff! Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 13 2004,03:07
Updated 08/12/2004 - ke4ntI think the easytag and the audacity are from armelle's website.. They have been available for a while, and they may not be cross-compat with user "dsl"... Of course, they require SOUND.. ( ....certainly worth a rebuild ... I like audacity, and we don't have an mp3 tag utility yet... ) nucpc, the owner of xvc, checked out the rebuild, and gave it his blessing... Another specific tool with special install instructions.... Because it is job/task - specific, I'm keeping it in the testing area to keep it out of the hands of new users desktops... I'm happy to see so many extensions behave the first time out !! Good Work, Folks! If we can get 1 or 2 more users to feedback a "Yea" or "Nay" , I can get them moved out of testing, so they will be available from the myDSLgui desktop utility.. 73 ke4nt Posted by ripcrd6 on Aug. 13 2004,07:13
I forgot about the sound thing. I was testing on my work PC again. I can't seem to get motivated when I'm at home. Too much stuff to fix in my new house. Working on someone else's PC tonight. One of the other apps was for MP3 tag editing. Maybe aria? Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 13 2004,15:04
Sounds like a contradiction in terms.... I mean, I don't fix my new car, do I ...just razzin ya' !! congrats on the house....
Now THAT IS par for the course.... That happens every week, ...Meanwhile my computers sit with open cases, ...Hard drives hanging by cables, ...loose cd's everywhere... ...sounds like home... ================================================= Back on topic... Reminder to Everyone: I've got some extensions just beggin' for some .info files... 73 ke4nt Posted by mpie on Aug. 13 2004,18:04
yep there are no files that causing probs at the mo.... tested all apart from those task specific ones......would love a working audacity.....I have vinyl i want to recover CHUNES from......
Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 13 2004,18:08
mpie: does Sweep not work for you? I haven't spent much time with Audacity...just assumed it was basically the same kind of application as Sweep.
Posted by mpie on Aug. 13 2004,18:15
yeah sweep runs just a preference thing have a nice guide to audacity....... could probably figure it out but ..hey extra packages good.......no new packages bad....but on a more serious note I will play with sweep more and try and suss it out Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 13 2004,18:21
In the meantime, since it's raining and I have to stay inside in front of my puter (poor me...), I'll see if I can get Audacity running as a .dslBTW, ke4nt1: Did you ever get that fluxbox-dev extension? I know you're getting flooded these days, but I'm just curious whether Postfix may have burped. Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 13 2004,21:33
Sweep is awesome.... works great for me..I love audio apps, it's my career choice and field of interest.. The audacity.dsl would be good to add to the repository.. ...Hmm...wondering if there is a way to extract the "alsa" sound package from the 09/2003 Knoppix CD without recompiling the DSL kernel.. I am continuing to review the fluxbox 0.9.9 .dsl.. I have to weigh the install of the .dsl against possibly interfering with the base install.. especially for new users.. Most .dsl contribs are simply add-ons, additions to the base DSL .iso.. Some others actually match, and sometimes overwrite and upgrade/downgrade packages within the base filesystem.. This one being a "fluxbox" .dsl , I'm giving it a little more TLC than usual.. ...and while we are not getting too "flooded" with extensions, there has been a steady release of new titles the last 10-15 days.. 73 ke4nt Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 14 2004,03:18
Thanks for the confirmation...I was just getting concerned that maybe you didn't receive the files.I spent a few minutes with Audacity...only a few minutes. I decided that the configure script is stupid, since it's asking for zip in order to create the help file....but I'd already said "--without-help" and "--with-help=no" to fix this....it just won't listen. Why it wants to use zip on a linux system to begin with is a mystery...so I'm going to ignore this for now. Perhaps a fresh approach after some sleep will be better. I mainly wish I better understood the options in these configure scripts....most of the time I'm just guessing about what they want. Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 15 2004,03:52
Updated the list 08/14/2004 - ke4nt---> Opera 6.12 for DSL in both .dsl and .ci <--- contrib by cbagger01.. Thanks! mikshaw, I recieved them all intact...no problem... I should have sent u a pm 2 qsl those.. sri The audacity program can use vst plugins... that's a +... Somewhat off topic.. This week , one of my clients brought me several 78's to transfer to cdr. Released in 1927 thru 1928 by Columbia, they featured several skits by "Moran & Mack" .. Using a grab-bag of plugins, like Sonic Foundry's "Click & Pop" filter, along with some noise reduction and graphic dynamic enhancement, I was able to produce some very intelligible copy from those old lacquers... Another relic was an LP called "The Knowbody Else" , which thereafter became the band "Black Oak Arkansas".. Schweet transfer !... Again, having a wealth of plug-ins is the difference between good and great.. What a difference proper, conservative digital remastering can make ... And third, this summer, my parents passed onto me my grandmother's old record collection. I drooled over pristine 78's of Les Paul and Mary Ford, Nat King Trio, Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page, etc... Again, the right tools for the job really makes them shine ! 73 ke4nt Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 15 2004,14:27
That's very cool! Most of the vst plugins I have (or "had"?...a lot of my windows software is in other hands now) are instruments, so I'm not sure they'd work, but I have a couple of effects I can test with. Also just installed zip, so I'll go back to trying the .dsl shortly. Posted by mpie on Aug. 16 2004,10:07
way cool....... I love rooting thru old vinyl....... My dad's collection of 60's stuff has some well trippy stuff that i have not seen rereleased...on topic I am unable to reget sweep at the mo , ntl need to replace the cable under my house gonna be off line a while. Goodluck with audacity mikshaw...... was gonna have a go myself but....... Posted by ripcrd6 on Aug. 16 2004,15:09
I tried audacity on a PC w/ working sound. And there is no menu item after running. I couldn't recall if it was a cmd line program or not. I'll try to test on my laptop, but I've been missing out on a lot of sleep lately. I'm about to nod off at my desk. I did test some more .dsl files last night from my latest remaster. I'm up to 555MB with my wireless driver, some game roms and gameboy roms, and a few pictures, mp3s and videos for testing the apps with. I'll have to see what it would be w/out the extra cruft and just .dsl files. Heres the testing list (in order by date from the repository): gnomeicu.dsl - works I don't have an ICQ acct. so I didn't actually log on. xboing.dsl - works vnc4x_1_4_6.dsl - runs and places 2 icons on desktop and in the mydsl menu, clicking on those will launch the daemon, it shows in top as running. I did not try to connect. It was late and my head was fuzzy. Do you want me to try to connect? lincity.dsl - works awesome. I got sucked in for about 20 minutes. liquidwar.dsl - works I don't know what I was doing, but hte game did work. weird. powermanga.dsl - works sort of a galaga clone. eboard.dsl - I ran this and didn't see any menu item appear, probably a CLI app, will check again later. synaptic.dsl - I thought I put this on the CD, but it didn't show in the menu. koules.dsl - works koth.dsl - program dies after selecting localhost, didn't try putting in an address. abuse.dsl - works kicks ass dossizola.dsl - works wmcalc.dsl - works wmclock.dsl - works wmfrog.dsl - does not start up wmmoonclock - works, but I didn't get a picture of the moon. I didn't look outside, but we may be in a phase where it's dark. clicking in the dock app gives you other moon stats. wmpuzzle - works wmwifi - works, I got an Err in the dock app, but I didn't test in my laptop w/ the wireless driver. cgoban.dsl - works Posted by mpie on Aug. 16 2004,15:16
should be gui with audacity, depends how much the've trimed for the .dsl tho....
Posted by ripcrd6 on Aug. 16 2004,17:05
Either way, I couldn't get it to run. There are a few other dsl files I've gotten from individual's sites and they don't work either. Probably need to be rebuilt by ke4nt1 for cross-compatibility w/ the new dsl user.
Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 16 2004,18:56
We just had a new moon...that's probably why you didn't see a moon image.
Posted by ripcrd6 on Aug. 16 2004,19:27
Yeah, I thought so. I have too many trees in my yard to look out a window. Posted by hasty on Aug. 17 2004,07:22
This is for you ke4nt1Since we're wandering off thread I thought I should contribute:) While I have studio monitors for my main hi-fi I also have a 78 machine with a 6 foot papier mache horn (3foot at the bell) which uses hand cut fibre needles. It's very big & heavy. The sound can only be described as awesome! I usually play it with a baritone mute to avoid alarming the neighbours. The sound of pre electric recordings can be very good with the plucked bass getting right down there, and the wide bell mouth helps to spread the sound so it doesn't produce a single point source effect. The standard reaction of listeners is a wide grin. They never knew how good 78's can sound. Back to moon gazing through the trees...................... Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 17 2004,11:15
Fantastic! I've never seen one actually playable, only museum pieces..( I recorded a "Regina Music Box" with the 16" metal punched disks once ) You should take a good microphone, like an AKG condenser (451 or 460) and record a small selection for us, mp3 it, and post it up .. We should move this "music" thread to the "water cooler" section of the forum.. 73 ke4nt Posted by gui on Aug. 17 2004,12:31
Nice if you only could make thunderbird.dsl.....or thunderbird.ci.... Posted by mpie on Aug. 17 2004,13:03
working on that one....... used too be one but it no good..........yes a .ci for it is a good idea except tha ci's are not writable..... so would mean syncing too packages........ food for thought tho..... Posted by ripcrd6 on Aug. 18 2004,15:53
More testing fodder. Testing done on the laptop with sound. Got my current remaster down around 500MB.
eboard.dsl - I apparently was imagining things. I did not have this on the remaster adn have still not tested it. It is on there now. synaptic.dsl - I didn't have it on there last time, again I wass imagining things. It is on there now, but not tested. wmmoonclock - now that there is a sliver of moon I know for sure that this app works. wmlaptop.dsl - launches and then exits. The app appears at the top of the dock and then disappears. wmpinboard.dsl - works gqcam.dsl - works I took 3 pics and saved to the hard drive. Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 18 2004,18:03
Fodder is good......Eboard.dsl - works here, beats me every time.. ( waiting on a new gnuchess to go with it?? ) Synaptic.dsl - Needs dsl-dpkg.dsl installed first. Works for me... WMmoonclock - good WMpinboard - very useful... gqcam - no cam.. thanks for the feedback 73 de Kent ke4nt Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 21 2004,15:18

Thank you! =o)Please note ke4nt's statement "Please test and feedback". I'm particularly interested in feedback about Fluxbox and Audacity. I'll be rebuilding Audacity in the next few days, but would like to know of any requested changes in addition to those I already have in mind. I'm going to add id3tag support, hopefully remove the help file, and use higher compression to get the file size down a little....maybe even change the appearance a little to fit in with the DSL look. On the repository page:md5sum not displaying for fluxbox, sid1, skype, and audacity. info file not displaying for fluxbox. Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 21 2004,22:55
Thanks, I fixed the link to fluxbox-0.9.9.info The md5sums are there... It's a BUG in firefox... Try dillo or links/Glinks, you'll see what I mean.. All the .tar.gz md5 sums have that issue with Firefox.. 73 ke4nt Posted by adraker on Aug. 21 2004,23:36
I put some FB on Audacity in "safe extensions".I've just tried wvdial and wmppp. They work fine, the only thing that would be better is if wvdial opened up rxvt when selected from the mydsl menu,so that you can ctrl-c the process. But of course you can always just open a root console and type in "wvdial",then ctrl-c it when you're finished. These 2 packs are really handy when you're on dial-up. If you've got a prepared wvdial.conf, getting on line while on live cd is so much easier now. Adraker Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 21 2004,23:54
That should be easy to add into the menu line...73 ke4nt Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 22 2004,00:50
That's a strange bug...does it have anything to do with "tar.gz" in the filename? Doesn't seem like that would make any difference, but I can't think of any other reason...it's just a text file, after all.
Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 22 2004,01:38
updated 08/21/2004 - ke4nt - more themesBeen that way for a while... I did substitute out the .tar.gz in the names of the .info files, just so they would work in Firefox, much to some others dismay.. I have to agree that I dislike patching our website just for Firefox.. .. and yes, it is the .tar.gz in the filename.. I don't know where Firefox keeps its default action for .tar.gz. It tries to handle it as a tar.gz, but gets confused when it doesn't work. If you find where to change this default behavior in Firefox, let us KNOW 73 ke4nt Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 22 2004,04:02
I've noticed firefox also has trouble with gzipped web pages....it always wants to download them as archives rather than decompress and display.I haven't thought enough about it to try to figure out how to fix it...maybe something to do with the ~/.phoenix/.../mimeTypes.rdf, but that's just a guess. I've also seen where Firefox has troubles downloading .tar.gz files.. I won't even USE firefox for downloading them anymore.. They all get corrupted horribly.. Dillo does fine , wget does fine, Boo on Firefox... I hope they fix this in the later versions.. 73 ke4nt Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 22 2004,18:06

eboard.dsl - works, but only the 3rd game engine, crafty, will start a game.Freeciv.dsl - started server then client on a clean DamnSmall boot. Program starts up, but could not start an actual game. acm.dsl - works synaptic.dsl - works aria.dsl - works Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 23 2004,22:31
Freeciv.dsl - I moved it out of testing temporarily..Once you have your clients configured, all I did was type" start" in the server window... ( this was all on the localhost box, no network during test ) If it heaves or hoses, let me know.. Thanks for the FB, I will move some more extensions into the main area shortly. Check the "barrage" game again, a household favorite.. I changes the menu item to list the full path, seems better now. If all is good, I will update the .info file.. 73 ke4nt Posted by ripcrd6 on Aug. 24 2004,04:06
barrage was working for me, as long as I have sound. I'll have to remaster tomorrow and include some of the new stuff. I'm working on a new project right now, so I don't have as much time.

which project can be more important than DSL?
Posted by ripcrd6 on Aug. 24 2004,18:07
Couple of things. I have to do my normal work, yuck. I'm trying to customize Knoppix for someone to boot up, detect a wifi card, join a session with a xdmcp server (xserver). This is proving to not be easy. My original method failed. It's on a laptop, so it needs extra tweeking. Starting a new project with someone in my Linux User Group to make a website that has a simple interface to create either a custom Debian installer ISO or a custom LiveCD. Maybe both. Not sure what language it's going to be in, maybe php and python or java (yuck). I'm mostly the idea man and designer and I'm working with a programmer. I've dealt with more LiveCDs than anyone in my LUG, so I'm kind of the point man on this stuff. Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 26 2004,13:07

more testing done with 0.7.3 since my 0.8 doesn't work.New themes working: 7Matrix. 7color, amber, natured, rox, sid1, strawberry All work fine. Tried the xmms skins package and some worked, some didn't. Do you want a list? The ones that didn't just give you a standard xmms. Tried the revamped barrage and it works. Audacity-1.2.1 - works. It doesn't seem to allow you to rewind. Also I have no idea what I am doing w/ this app, but I opened a couple of files and played them. eboard- still same problem. Only the crafty game engine works. dsl-fluxbox-0.9.9 - seems to run and it adds the menu items, but doesn't seem to do anything. The restart in the menu does force the wm to restart. freecraft- doesn't do anything. Do I have to run from command line? If so I couldn't find it. wmfrog - wmdock app to monitor weather. I got this to work. I installed the .dsl, then in emelfm you have to run "wmfrog -s <your weather station collsign>" for me this was, "wmfrog -s kmci" for the Kansas City MO Int'l airport or "wmfrog -s kmkc" for the downtown KC airport. The website to look up stations is http://www.nws.noaa.gov/tg/siteloc.shtml That address should probably be put in the .info file along w/ how to run it. Works great. wmppp - loads and will run and go to the dock. I don't have dialup though. When I ran Skype, an icon appeared below this dock app. xv - now works. It's a bit clunky, but it works. skype - works. I was able to create a new user name and passwd. wvdial - runs and some stuff is put in /usr/bin, but I have no idea how to set it up. wmaker - didn't do anything for me. quake2 - I wonder if there is a way to get this one to ask where the .pak files are on startup. I have my notes around here somewhere about how to load this, but I've not gotten it to run. How about if I were able to drop my .pak file in a /quake2 directory in the root of the CD? doom - lxdoom works great, but I'm wondering if there is a way for me to drop the episodes not included w/ the shareware version into the CD and be able to run them? Right now you only get Knee Deep in the Blood. Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 30 2004,06:56

The latest, wingmaker-theme.tar.gz, is VERY NICE.. Excellent use of both soft and deep colors ..
Some of these were zipped, and some tarred... For the zips to work you need the gnu-utils installed, I think.. All of them work on my system, but I always boot with dsl-dpkg and gnu-utils by default ... I think I will go back and tar them all.. TODO
This game is SO COOL.. I've given away several copies of DSL by request to people who just wanted to play this game... The "F" keys switch to window mode, and the "S" key kills the sound. After much searching, I can't find a way to make it open up in window mode by default.. There doesn't seem to be any command options available ..
There is a new version uploaded recently.. I'm still working on it, trying to get it to function properly without the custom scripts in it. DSL doesn't distribute custom software, only subsets of installs .. Freecraft needs both icons and menu options .. Runs fine from command line - TODO
Another TODO Doom .wad's go in "/usr/share/games/doom" directory Quake2 .pak files go in "/home/dsl/.quake2/baseq2" directory I should post these locations in their .info files as well TODO 73 ke4nt Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 30 2004,13:03
The restart is used to return to fluxbox stable from fluxbox development. The first menu item, "enable", changes .xinitrc (if you're currently running fluxbox)...restarting X should bring you into fluxbox-dev.
Hmmm...I didn't think of it as custom software, but more of a wrapper. What would you like changed? The only script added is ~/flux-dev. What it does is copy ~/.xinitrc and changes the "fluxbox" line of that copy to fluxbox-dev. On first run it copies dev-init in order to prevent overwriting the current ~./fluxbox/init, and creates a couple of empty config files. I can try a different approach, but I think anything done to prevent overwriting the current files will require some sort of script (the current menu item does something similar, but is more complicated from the user's point of view). The default config files are built into the program with no configure option to change them. Posted by cbagger01 on Aug. 30 2004,16:30
In my opinion, your script sounds like it is performing a function that is normally done by a shell wrapper but I have not read it myself. Hopefully you and the DSL team can figure out a way to get the needed functionality without crossing the line because Fluxbox-dev is an extension that seems to be in demand.A member of the team was able to get my Opera extension to work acceptably so it is possible. Worst case, you are allowed to distribute it on someone else's web/ftp/download site if not on the DSL repository. Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 30 2004,18:58
I'd rather change it in order for it to remain in the repository. The script is as follows:

Looks like a "shell wrapper" to me. It doesn't try to do any function other than get the program up and running. I can see how someone (like me) would have difficulty understanding the sed line, but other than that it looks readable and well commented. But my opinion isn't the one that matters. You'll have to work that out with the DSL team.

The sed line became a little more complex than I had originally wanted. At first I just had it replacing the last line of ~/.xinitrc regardless of what is there. Unfortunately, this doesn't account for blank lines or comments at the end of the file, so it turned out to be:1) Remove all blank lines, as well as spaces and tabs at the beginning of lines. 2) Remove lines beginning with # (begining spaces and tabs were removed so this could be done). 3) Remove last line. 4) Add a new line. Keep in mind that this doesn't affect the original .xinitrc...only the copy. In the current menu item, only a line containing "fluxbox" is grepped, but this doesn't deal with an xinitrc which has been edited to start a different window manager. It also edits the original .xinitrc, which I'm trying to avoid. sorry about hijacking the thread...I was only responding to posts, really edit: The comments were added for this thread...they're not in the packaged script. The new fluxbox-0.9.9 is posted in the repository..The only change made to the wrapper was a check for an existing copy of fluxbox running. Working in only the /home/* and /opt directories was the key. It's a "green" level extension, and works nicely ... Good Work, mikshaw ... 73 ke4nt Posted by vabene on Aug. 31 2004,07:25
