Just thought I'd let you know that I let my nephew play freecraft over the weekend.  I'm still using 0.7.3 and figured out how to make freecraft work.

You run the freecraft.dsl and then from emelfm, goto /usr/games and double-click on freecraft.

One problem with it is that it freezes after you get to level 3 or so.  This happened a couple of times and so I made him quit playing.
I turned him into a lover of Quake2 though.  He requested that I make him a copy of the disk.  Maybe I'll make a Linux user out of him.  :)

Hmm.. is there not a menu item for it?
I'll investigate  - TODO

I add freecraft.dsl to the \optional directory and it shows up in the mydsl menu, but after clicking there I think it shows in the menu, but doesn't actually launch the program.  I have to go into emelfm to that directory (\usr\games) to launch it or go to the command line.

I also figured out the command line to get quake2 to work.
I run the quake2.dsl, open an xterm,  (assuming that in building the DSL.iso that you put the pak0.pak file (48MB) into a new directory called \base2q)
type "sudo cp \cdrom\base2q\pak0.pak \home\dsl\.quake2\base2q"
wait for the copying and then you can launch Quake2 from the CLI or the desktop icon.
You may want to verify this and copy to the info file so it is available to everyone.  Also you might put the URL to the shareware edition in the info file to consolidate this info.

It looks like the tmp/mydsl.menu/freecraft file in the dsl has:

  [exec] (freecraft) {freecraft}

instead of

  [exec] (freecraft) {/usr/games/freecraft}

I had it right once, but I must have included the wrong version in the dsl file.

I played a lot of single player games, but no campaigns, which I am assuming is were your nephew was going for level 3.

I should have caught that error in the menu..   My bad..  TODO

I have a request, can a button be added in the MyDSL gui to click-and-run extensions from the testing area?

It just seems a lot safer than making a bunch of "coasters" of bad .dsl burns.

Oh, and a warning when you click over to the testing area would be good, too.

Saiden,

coasters?
I don't understand...

I use glinks or wget to download a .tar.gz or .dsl file from the
testing area to my home/dsl directory, ( the default )
open emelfm, and highlight the downloaded file and press the mydsl button..
then use the desktop menu to run it and try it out..

If I like it, I copy it to my USBkey or  a storage partition on my HD
If I don't want to keep it, delete it..
No "burning" involved...

Did I misunderstand something again ?

And we don't want everyone to be trying to run untested
apps in their builds, especially the new guys, who won't know
how to recover from a failure..  That's why they are in "testing"
Once they are well" tested" and receive good feedback
from our userbase, I will move them to the main area,
and they will be available in the myDSLgui .

clacker,
I will look over the freecraft this evening..
Sounds like you got it nailed..

I'm talking about a button on the MyDSL gui that you click and it shows you the extensions on the testing area, after a warning.

Something like, "These extensions are in testing and may not be safe to use! This area is for experienced users only, running from Live-CD only! Using these extensions on a HD install is NOT RECOMMENDED!!!
<Continue> <Go Back to the Regular Extensions Area>"

This warning should probably be in big, red letters. You would click "Continue" and it would show you the extensions inn the testing area to click and run, or click "Go Back..." to go back.

Just an idea. And it would make it easier than using Links/wget and mydsl-load.

Gimp 2.0 is sa-weeeet.
I was just playing with it for a while, and haven't run into any problems yet.  some of the filters and scripts cause my system to slow down a bit, so users with small amounts of ram may need patience...this is gimp itself, though...nothing to do with the way the extension was built.

One thing I cannot understand, though....
I removed the locale directory (21mb uncompressed) and zipped it back up just to see what the difference would be, and my new archive was 29MB.  This is using gzip -9
How the heck did you get it down to 21mb in the first place, never mind also having the locale directory included?  Is there a higher gzip compression than 9?  I didn't remove all the base directories for the test, but I can't see how this would make that much difference.

firefox-0.9.3.dsl contra gimp2.0.dsl

i can not have firefox-0.9.3.dsl and gimp2.0.dsl myDSL-loaded at the same time.

if i have firefox-0.9.3.dsl in mydsl dir (so it load at startup) and gimp2.0.dsl in /optional
then firefox runs fine
now when i mydsl-load gimp2.0.dsl, this loads well but when i try to run it i get:
Code Sample

relocation error: /usr/bin/gimp2.0: undefind symbol: gdk_threads_lock

if i have gimp2.0.dsl in mydsl dir (so it load at startup) and firefox-0.9.3dsl in /optional
then gimp2.0f runs fine
now when i mydsl-load firefox-0.9.3 it does not run

i think they use incompatible gtk2 libraries.
would it be posible to remove the gtk2 library files from both, then create a new dsl extension with the libraries and have all other extension use this?

Posted by ke4nt1 on Sep. 13 2004,16:30
I have moved the gimp2.0 back into testing.

It uses more recent versions of pango and GTK than
firefox.0.9.3, abiword, and others..

Perhaps it can be rebuilt to run within its own directory space.
Then it won't interfere with other operations..

Thanks to henk1955 for the heads-up..

Qcad is great and something i wanted very much. But 39 MB on Ramdisk? Could we please have an qcad.uci file as well ?
Posted by guest on Sep. 16 2004,09:00
i looks like the repostiory shifts from *.dsl to *.tar.gz
*.dsl intergrate with the DSL base code. (requiest big parts of the code to be moved to ramdisk)
*.tar.gz only write to dir like /home/dsl /etc for settings and /opt for the binaries (code) (which are already in ramdisk)
*.uci have a user.tar.gz for settings in /home/dsl, /etc and a compressed image of the binaries (cod) in /opt.
so it must be very easy to convert any *.tar.gz into a*.uci i.e
amsn93, qcad, audacity

Done - qcad is also offered in a .uci format
