I have downloaded a few app's off this site with the .dsl extension, but i cant figure out how to run them. I save them on my harddrive in windows, boot up in dsl mount the hard drive, but when i go to the location i saved them at there not there. If i try downloading a .dsl while in dsl it just appers as a text file in with random jibberish.

Also, my second question, whats synaptic? I installed it and run it, and i found a few games, clicked install, and proceed, and it installed them. The only thing i cant figure out is where are they? How do i run them?

Sorry for so many questions, im a newbie in dsl and linux.

.dsl applications should include at least a mydsl menu entry, many come with icons...... how are you trying to download them?     open an xterm type wget then right click your mouse on the link to the /dsl you want select copy link location then paste into the xterm after wget then press enter when that has downloaded open emelfm in /home/dsl you will see the dsl file highlight it by left clicking the mouse
then click on the mydsl button at the top.....
this will install the app for you the program name should appear in the mydsl fluxbox menu and an icon may appear on your desktop... there are a few exceptions VBA being one of them

Synaptic installs debian packages but does not  update menus/icons......
you need to know what programs you installed then you should be able to start this by selecting run program from the menu then typing the name of the program in and pressing enter.......
hope this helps... if you are having probs with a specific app then treply here I'll see what i can remember.....
I'm not actually at my dsl pc right now

for downloading, you can also use any web browser and right click on the link to the .dsl and select "Download link" or something like that.
Once it's done, open emelfm, chose the .dsl file you downloaded and press the MyDSL button. Your program should install itself.

you can do this but some browsers especially firefox can sometimes mangle the app wget is far more reliable..........

you get less trouble with apps, or use the my dsl gui for the packages no longer in testing.......

I've got a question reguarding .dsl's. I downloaded openoffice.dsl , used WinISO to add it to the DSL iso in the /optional directory, and burned the ISO using Nero. I booted into DSL, opened the DSL menu. Went to myDSL>openoffice.dsl (i think that was what it said). Nothing happened. Any suggestions on what could be wrong, or a better way to install the .dsl.

Also, firefox.dsl doesnt seem to be in the repository. What would be the best way to get it so its already on the cd and doesnt have to be downloaded?

Do you have 384MB of RAM?

The Openoffice.dsl extension requires 384MB of RAM.

If you want a less RAM-intensive extension for Open Office, try downloading the Openoffice.ci and OOuser.tar.gz files in the "Compressed ISO" section of the myDSL repository.

As for Firefox, you can do one of the following:

Wait for the new firefox extension to appear in the repository.

Use the Right-click Fluxbox menu to download it. I believe the path is Apps -> Net -> got the bandwidth -> Firefox  or something like that.

Then add /opt/firefox to your backup list. The file is called filetool.lst

I've got 512 mb ram, so i hope that's enough. Is it a problem that I used the dsl toram option?

For the firefox, thanks, I wasnt sure what happened to it.

I'm thinking of making a DSL cd that will have OOo and Firefox already installed, with the icons on the desktop, but I'm gonna wait until DSL 0.8 to try it (one of my computers works better with the newer knoppix). Does that require more than just adding the .dsl files to the ISO?

Nope.

All you need to do is add the files to the top directory of the ISO.

My suggestion is to install both the firefox.ci (and the companion ffuser.tar.gz) and the openoffice.ci (and companion oouser.tar.gz) to the ISO.

The compressed ISO files use much less RAM.

However, if you have a need for speed the *.dsl files will run from inside the RAM disk. They will use up RAM but they will run even faster.

Adding the .dsl files to the top directory worked perfectly. Thanks.

DonttPanic:  I remaster all the time the way you did with WinISO.  I put all the .dsl files I want available in the optional directory, even .ci files.  The directory gets scanned at boot, but they don't load.  Then I load up from the mydsl menu whichever program I want to run.  Any dsl you want loaded everytime at boot, like firefox, you can put in the top level directory.  If you are using WinISO, you want to click on the CDROM icon or the title next to it and that selects the top-level, then drop your stuff on the right-hand pane.  When you download stuff from the repository prior to building a new ISO w/ WinISO, go ahead and put the .dsls in a directory called optional.  Then when you edit the dsl0.7.3.iso, you can just add a directory rather than a file or files at a time.  This also gets around the problem of not being able to create a new directory in the WinISO program.

Another problem w/ this program is that occasionally when you make an incremental change to your ISO file, like adding or removing some .dsl after testing, when you try to save, the entire program will lock up, give an error or crash.  I get around this by using save as and incrementing my ISO file by a number or letter.  e.g.  DSL073-B1.ISO, DSL073-B2.ISO  I keep the last 2-3 ISOs in my f:\iso\damnsmall directory and just delete a few every now and then.  Welcome to the remastering world.   I hate downloading stuff over and over again.

That is almost word-for-word how I used to remaster with
UltraIso in the windows environment..

It's Funny how UltraIso has the same crash and directory problems
that WinIso does!?...

I have been reading thru many posts here recently about using the
cdrecord and tools to do this in linux instead of XP.
So far, my success has been better than with XP, and several
issues with CDRW's and multisession seem to have diminished
under linux by not using a gui to do this..

Webpages like these really help...

As well as several detailed posts recently on this subject..

Thanks goes to the userbase for sharing in my remastering success.
One less reason to see a M$ logo in my day to day activities...

There was one odd thing. When I placed openoffice.dsl in the /optional directory, loaded DSL, and clicked to load it, nothing happened. I didnt get any error report... or I dont think I did. Was it just a bad burn or something (it was to a CDRW)? However, using the same cd, I reburned the iso with openoffice.dsl in top directory, and it worked just fine.

the openoffice.dsl may have gotten corrupted in the copy to ISO process. or been on a bad spot on the disk.

Is there anther way to install a .dsl application instead using emelfm? such a line-command or....?
Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 20 2004,18:53
Try "mydsl-load name_of_app.dsl" from the command line.

i tried that and got a 'command not found'.. i also dont have a MyDSL button in emelfm?

any ideas?  :(

as far as I remember...
the mydsl-load command has been in DSL since 0.7.1,
as well as the mydsl-load button...

I think the myDSLgui came onboard in 0.7.2

What version are you running ?

Are you trying this as "root" ?
(try user "damnsmall" or "dsl" , rather than root. )
the "root" user status is not necessary ..

if i do have 0.7 (which would explain why i dont have MyDSL stuff), is there anyway of upgrading? without losing all my files and settings?

thanks  :)
