I downloaded some .dsl's and put them in my xp partition, and I tried run program but that dosent work (after browsing to mnt/hda5/...)

What am I supposed to do to get them running?

Posted by mpie on Aug. 25 2004,08:42
if they are not added to your disk they cannot be automatically detected....
mount the partition open emelfm   enter the partition in emelfm highlight the file copy to /home/dsl/ highlight the copied one in /home/dsl/whateverfile.dsl press the mydsl button in emelfm and then it will load!!!!!........

after copying them to /home/dsl/ it still dosent work.

And at the bottom of emf it says something about an error gzip magic.

try a different .dsl or reget the one you have last time this was posted it was a bad download...........
as there shouldn't be a problem, have a look at the permissions on the file, sometimes moving them around makes them change..... but likely a bad download.

hmmm pretty hard te explain 6 bad downloads :|
what should the permissions be?

Posted by mpie on Aug. 25 2004,10:59
it can vary ..... I dont know them for all of them but they should be owned by dsl staff........
check the md5 sums of your down load against the ones in the repository  open an xterm type md5sum any.dsl (where any is the name of the file > txt. this will make a text file containing the md5sum in /home/dsl double click it to view then go to the repository and veiw the md5sum there the two sets of code should be identical if they are then its a permission issue  and you are probably  better of re downloading as diff dsl  may have diff perms.........
cant think of owt else... sorry

do it as root?
Posted by chickenman on Aug. 25 2004,13:24
can you run emelfm as root?, or do  have to use the console?

mpie: Instead of manually comparing two numbers, you could just download the original md5.txt into the same directory as the archive.  Run "md5sum -c filename.txt".

jerome2: I've gotten "invalid tar magic" errors, they turned out to be corrupt downloads.  A redownload fixed it.

chickenman: "sudo emelfm", or "sudo su - -c emelfm"

---> DON'T use FIREFOX to download extensions !! <---
Use the wget console utility, or the myDSLgui desktop app.
Even dillo works better ...

Coming from windows, I expected the program to run some sort of Linux equivalent to install shield, but I didn’t know it just extracted the file silently.

It seems the firefox browser I have in windows doesn’t like me to download more than one file at once. That explains the amount of corrupted downloads I got :|

I got doom and znes working, too bad I lost my roms when I lost xp, I have to search for the back up cd :)

Comming from windows, I expected the program to run some sort of linux exuliavent to install sheild, but I didnt know it just extracted the file silently.

pre-compiled programs are generally just archives.  Windows programs are often built with programs that give you a nice gui from which to choose where yo want the archive extracted, and then it may add some registry settings and miscellaneous other stuff.  It's my assumption that people who develop packages for Linux don't want to bother with the extra hooplah...if you want to install a program specifically tailored to your needs, compiling is the way to go.

On DSL, we have a handy script which extracts the archive and maybe adds a menu item....nothing more is really necessary.  It would be nice, though, if it had a verbose option so you could see exactly what's being installed.  Is this an option?

In windows one problem I have is programs installing themselves and after you install them not frmoving all traces of themselves, example registy keys.

And making an installer app was never a big deal to me just use nullsoft or something, I guess I have to get used to doing everything myself in linux.

Ain't it great? :D

One good thing about having to manually deal with a lot of things another OS might do for you is that you have all the control.
But truthfully, most distros don't force you to do everything manually...there are gui tools or scripts available that will relieve you of a lot of tedious work.  What's even better, though, is Bash.  You can do anything with a well-written shell script...unlike the scripting capabilities of some operating systems....

FYI,

If the DSL package is a large one, it could take some time for it to load.

Usually I try and load them after downloading the file to my home directory. Then use the "myDSL" button in Emelfm to install the DSL extension.

Sometimes it will get busy for a while and eventually you will see some sort of message in the "results" window at the bottom of the Emelfm program window. This is how I know when the install is complete.
