Automatic internet install?Forum: myDSL Extensions (deprecated) Topic: Automatic internet install? started by: TyphoonMentat Posted by TyphoonMentat on May 31 2004,16:11
Would it be possible to perhaps set up myDSL so that it can download the apposite packages from the repository? As well as including packages in a folder on the CD, the user could perhaps have a file full of links to the applications they wanted to be retrieved. This combines the script and package approach, meaning that a lot of scripts wouldn't ever be needed. Yes, we are incorporating this into the next release which will be out soon. The downside of doing this is that it will encourage people to download at will instead of keeping local copies. Posted by THEBINARYMAN on June 01 2004,13:08
Hmm...But as an alternative and as a way to encourage to have those files on your cd perhaps if we organized a vote as to what kind of add-ons would be most likely used on the common "myDSL" CD and create a second ISO image? Not to mention create a template script to make your own *.DSL install script? yeah - downloading the apps over and over and over and over the lines would NOT be helpful - maybe leave that option out? unless you can somehow grab from some distributed p2p spots like freenet or gnutella or etc... putting those options in the menu system is gonna cause a LOT of sporadic freaks to click and click - who knows, i hope the d boys don't start blocking dsl'ers who are unnecessarily apt-getting at every boot... just some thoughts from out there - thanks always for your kind contributions. There's already a lovely script to do that - at any of the mirrors, it's the little 2kb file called mkmydsl. |
