John has recently updated the myDSL repository..
Thanks, John, for the bandwidth and your time....

Please try some of the .dsl extensions that have been uploaded.
I am looking for some feedback on :

1.) How they run on different hardware..

2.) How they run on different installs
       (a. LiveCD  b. PoorMan's  c. Frugal  d. HDinstall)

3.) How do they rate?
       (a."Awesome"  b."Useful"  c."Dead Fish"  d. "What is a 'ham' ?")

4.) Rants, Comments, or Suggestions....

All the .dsl's from ke4nt1 have been revised over
the Memorial Day Weekend 5/30/2004. If you d/loaded
copies before this date, please retry these again!
They should be well behaved. They have been tested
on several systems and with other dsl users.
They perform well here in any type of install..
( I'm learning this stuff as I go....;-)
So far, the feedback has been good....

Well, so far I've used their games (xpuyopuyo, doom, ace-of-penguin, xgammon), abiword and openoffice, firefox, and MPlayer.

So far, all but the MPlayer work on the LiveCD (MPlayer needs to write to /etc, and can't, so it chokes).  I did an HD install earlier (with only OpenOffice, Firefox and Ace), then manually installed the ones I've said up there (except Abiword).  Everythin's workin' great on that, too.

Try again with d/loading the mplayer....
Could be from an earlier upload, which had the /etc/skel problem..
I have made revisions, in the last few days...
The one on the repository now is the latest, and
I have received good feedback so far....

Check out xmame...
...some ol' classics...

Tnx for the feedback...

Hi ke4nt1,

Tried your mplayer.dsl and may I say a VERY welcome addition to DSL! Aside from some missing codecs it played most of my video files no problem   Although the double and fullscreen options did not resize the video feed (it just resized the window). I think it maybe to do with DSL's X server ???

I tried Firefox, ace, samba and they worked great from livecd.  I loaded the gnu-utils, but didn't use them.  I just plopped them on my custom CD, just in case I needed them.  I tried to load the OOo on a system w/ enough ram, but it bombed out during boot, w/ out of memory error.  I think we're really pushing the limits of the point of the  distro w/ that one.  You can, but why? :p

I also tried synaptic from the control panel.  Slow to come down, but it worked.  It's probably better after install to HDD and w/ the dpkg repository restored.
I might get a chance soon to test more games and others.

FYI,

The 384MB RAM requirement probably assumes that you are only adding the OpenOffice.dsl extension and not a bunch of others (IE: Samba, Abiword, etc).

It is possible to run out of memory on a 384MB RAM computer if you load up OpenOffice.dsl along with a bunch of othe extensions.

My advice is to use the OpenOffice.ci extension with DSL version 0.7.1
This version uses little RAM and leaves plenty of room leftover for your other extensions.

Good Luck.

Good point cbagger01. The .ci files use way less ram. I wonder if we now need to maintain both versions of these files. I made the firefox.tar.gz as an example of a simple user created extension based on the existing download script. I was hoping that it would be an easy example to get users started making their own extensions. The openoffice.dsl after a download and install of openoffice. Both use alot of memory. The ci files are the "second generation" of extensions. It would certainly be easier to have to maintain only one type of extension in the case of these two applications. I am open to what is best for the users.

In the case of OpenOffice, I think that the package is so large that a *.ci extension is without a doubt the best option and the *.dsl one should be no longer maintained with respect to future updates.

However, since (as far as I know) there are only 4 cloop devices available and one of them is already used up by the DSL distro itself, the user is limited to only 3 *.ci extensions that can be in use at one time.

So this means that *.dsl extensions also have value.  For example, firefox.ci is a great package for low-RAM computers, but firefox.tar.gz is great for users with more RAM who are already using up all 4 cloop devices.

So in the firefox case there is a benefit to maintain 2 separate packagaes.

Just my $0.02
