Ke4nt -

We probably don't say it enough so, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!  :)

You are doing a heck of alot of work here. In my mind, you are the real reason the mydsl craze has continued to grow. The amount of maintenence you are doing is incredible.

You're work has allowed John and robert to concentrate solely on development.

I think I speak for the whole community when I say DAMN FINE JOB!!

Ooh, Inkscape!  Been wanting a vector extension, was almost about to look into doing something myself.
(Apparently it's basically taken over from Sodipodi.  Think Illustrator)

I'm waiting to see that tux commander hit the testing area....

Do you think it's better than emelFM?  I guess I'm starting to like emelFM better now that I've been using it for a while.

The tux_commander is in testing..
It is a fat app, because of the included GTK2..
The app itself only requires 354kb ! .. The rest is GTK2 support.

This is a nice app, with many great features, automounting, etc..
You can easily configure your favorite viewers, editors, etc..
I just don't care for it's size as a standalone application..
It will run from a pristine liveCD, as do all the GTK2 apps I have uploaded lately..

Repeat of the above....

The GTKPod.dsl is in testing..
It is a fat app, because of the included GTK2..
The app itself only requires 425kb ! .. The rest is GTK2 support.

I don't have an iPod to test this with, so feedback to us with your trial run..

I agree!  You'll need a quick HOWTO for us.  I live in Houston so the maps you're displaying are right up my alley.

What equipment do you need to use the apps?  I don't have any HAM or weather stuff.  Just a GPS to get my current loc.

What is that satellite app actually doing?

XPlanet 1.1.0

What a cool app..
I have this running in windowed mode by default.
You must see < http://xplanet.sourceforge.net > for many more uses for this app !!
The scripts for other planets and views are available and incredible !

This works with the Predict-Gsat satellite simulator to make the
live desktop background satellite position monitor...  see above..

Run it without the windowed default for full background application..

Screenies to whet your appetite:

Max:
Using most of these apps to their full extent typically requires
one to have an amateur radio license, since they log with one.
Certainly the APRS app, which TRANSMITS as well as receives..

But there is no reason not to play with them, similar to the way
one would use a "scanner" to monitor the police, fire, and amateur airwaves.

For the Xastir app, it will work with your GPS unit if you have the serial connection.
Xastir normally connects via Radio to the internet via the APRS network,
providing email and other services to amateur radio operators in areas with
NO INTERNET CONNECTION.
I have had many fine chats ( messenger style ) with other radio ops on the
internet from my laptop connected via radio thru APRS while on-the-road.
I have also sent and received email thru the APRS network from other users
who are not hams, and have internet/email access, while NOT having any
direct internet access myself, only the radio, TNC, and laptop..
There are volunteer sites that bridge internet access with the radio links.
These links require a valid License, published by the FCC, and a passcode.
Go to < http://www.findu.com > for more info on the APRS/HAM network.
Another site is < http://www.ariss.net > . This site shows recent positions of the
ISS Space Station, and recents contacts made to it and thru it via APRS.

The Predict-GSat app is for tracking satellites.
Useful for finding a "window of opportunity" to 'work' someone via radio.
It also finds "visible" passes for you to view in the skies from your location.
Iridium Flashes are popular among astromonical buffs. You can track them .
Visible ISS and shuttle passes can be predicted, as well as eclipses ..
( the moon is also a "satellite" )
While the Mir, Shuttles, and ISS are my favorite to contact, I have worked
many people via the AO40 amateur satellite, and worked the Russian Birds
RS12 and RS15 many, many times..
Most ALL satellites have "beacon" frequencies, which are listed in this program.
Tuning your scanner or receiver to them, and having some type of outoor
antenna connected (even a wire) ,
you can "hear" their passing over your location, and predict their return..
Most either transmit their operational status,
or a "hi hi de musat" message in Morse Code ..
I use a Terminal Node Controller ( TNC = Radio Modem ) to decode
the packets that are transmitted from many of the satellites.
With a transmitter, the satellites are easy to communicate with.
They require low-power, and very minimal antennas ,
since they are "line-of-sight" receivers.  Fun stuff..
Both programs are easy to use, and don't require a lot of CPU to run..

The XPlanet app is one of many apps that will work from the
Predict-Server, receiving orbital data and painting in realtime
the satellites "footprints" in your "window-of -opportunity" .

BTW, thanks for your descriptions of the apps earlier.

I find these kinds of applications very facinating.  It's too bad I never had the opportunity to catch the "bug" when I was younger.

Has anyone used xplanets to make those pretty pictures?  The screen shots you posted looked very nice, but I was unable to get them to run because the maps were missing, except Earth.  For an 8 Meg download of basically a background program, I really thought you could have left the JPG files for the planets in the package.  Can you tell me where to find them?
Posted by StrayDog on Oct. 28 2004,21:47
also loading the xplanet.dsl causes firefox 0.9.3.1 to fail to open.  There is an "Error reading Pango modules file" error.  Load firefox, it works.  Load xplanets, but don't run it, and firefox gives the error.  using 8.3 version of damn small.
Posted by ke4nt1 on Oct. 28 2004,22:06
If you were to apt-get the xplanet app under the usual means,
then a "setup" would occur after the app in installed to your
filesystem.. This 'setup' updates pango/defoma/and gtk ..

Since I can't execute a script during the LOADING of a .dsl ,
The only way I can mimic this action is to place the setup
scripts in the startup file, which occur when you run the app.

The only solution is to RUN the app if you choose to LOAD it.
Once you run either one, then the pango should update,
and make both available to run..

Also, the 0.9.3.1 has been superseded by the 1.0PR
It also contains the gtk2 setup script with it's start file.
It should perform better for you.
The 0.9.3 and 0.9.3.1 are to be discontinued shortly..

If you still find issues, give me a heads-up, and I'll dig further.

I placed the website for xplanet in the .info file.
You should find much love there.. Nice pics..
Lots of downloads there for you to choose from..

I built the xplanets from the apt-get sources.
Unfortunately, they did not include the extras..
I did not choose to leave them out..

Feel free so submit an addon as a .dsl file .
Send it to extensions[at]damnsmalllinux[dot]org

For my purposes of using it with the Predict Server,
the earth pic is all I need..
It's a fat hungry app just for background usage..

This is the festival speech synthesizer ..
I have made two menu options for it.
One is a DSL welcome to all new users of Festival.
Another is the actual server for use in other programs.

It works well from command line as well.  e.g.
festival --tts "name-of-text-file"  ( with quotes )

I ripped out all the junk and docs EXCEPT for the ones
for the speech and server functions.. you'll need those soon ..

Nice to hear DSL talk !
