I'm using wvdial.dsl with DSL 0.8.2, and it works, but only with my menu item:
Code Sample
[submenu] (Dialer) {}
          [exec] (dial) {rxvt -rv  -T "dial" -e sudo wvdial}
          [exec] (hangup) { rxvt -rv  -T "Hangup" -e sudo killall wvdial}
        [end]

When I boot up, I "mydsl=hdb1 restore=hdb1 toram"
I have a bunch of dock apps in addition to firefox.uci and gimp1.2.dsl, Abiword.dsl in /optional in hdb1.
I then go to the desktop, and click on the MyDSL icon, and load all of the extensions that I want to use in the session. My menu, then, has this wvdial item:
Code Sample
[submenu](myDSL){}
  [exec] (wvdial) {/usr/bin/wvdial}
 [end]

at the top of the menu. If I use it to dial up with wvdial, it disconnects every time, probably because of no "sudo" as in my menu item.
Also note that wvdial is the only extension in the MyDSL menu, the others are
not included there. I have them, however, in my custom menu. Probably, I overwrite the original menu with mine, but I see that the one item remains, wvdial. I believe I have tried editing the menu, to remove the MyDSL entry, and
then backing up the system to the backup.tar.gz in hdb1, but it seems to return anyway.( I'll work with this a while)

Just wanted to report the wvdial problem, note that I start it in rxvt, so I can see what is happening. I also use the wmppp dock app, and it lights up soon after my wvdial setup connects, and I am off and running.

Although I have remastered DSL 0.8.2, I am running tests with a "barefoot" DSL 0.8.2 with extensions on a backup device, to see how that goes.
I use an extensive filetool.lst to get all the changes I want, and give a custom feel to DSL 0.8.2. I even have a special fluxbox style, that is more in tune with the one I have in Rapidweather Remaster, menu and toolbar colors & font.
Code Sample

opt/ppp
opt/bootlocal.sh
opt/powerdown.sh
opt/.firefox_plugins
home/dsl/filetool.lst
home/dsl/.fluxbox
home/dsl/.dillo
home/dsl/.links
home/dsl/.xserverrc
home/dsl/.xinitrc
home/dsl/download
home/dsl/upload
home/dsl/html
home/dsl/Mail
home/dsl/Calendar
home/dsl/.wmpinboarddata
home/dsl/weather.cfg
home/dsl/dockappclose
home/dsl/.sylpheed
home/dsl/.mozilla
home/dsl/.opera
home/dsl/.xmms
home/dsl/.gimp-1.2
etc/wvdial.conf

Other problem I had involved firefox, I tried to download a few extensions to it, and then firefox would not start, instead a dialog box came up "setting up extensions, etc." and that box would not go away. I had to delete all of the extensions in the /home/dsl/.mozilla/firefox/default.bz1/extensions directory to get firefox to start up normally.( I had all these extensions to firefox in my remaster, but that was with firefox 0.8.) I might try and copy them from my master copy for Rapidweather Remaster, and see what happens, doing a backup to keep them. Might not work, but would be worth a try. Not going to solve the problem with the firefox extension used with DSL 0.8.2, however.
---
I do like the general idea that I can get the latest DSL, for instance 0.8.3, and put my backup.tar.gz and my extensions in hdb1, /optional in it and be up and running.

It sounds like your menu item change should be included in a new version of the wvdial.dsl extension.

While we are on that subject, I notice that the files for Opera.uci and Abiword.dsl generate icons that overlap each other,
ie, come up in the same place on the
desktop. Here's a screen shot:
< Screen Shot >
Here's the .xtdesktop item for Abiword:
Code Sample
table Icon
 Type: Program
 Caption: Abiword
 Command: /opt/abiword/abiword
 Icon: .xtdesktop/abi-ant.png
 X: 286
 Y: 185
end

And also the .xtdesktop item for Opera 6.12:
Code Sample
table Icon
 Type: Program
 Caption: Opera
 Command: /opt/opera/opera
 Icon: .xtdesktop/opera.png
 X: 295
 Y: 200
end

I got these from /home/dsl/.xtdesktop, so they apparently represent what
the desktop shows, although the numbers don't make that too obvious.
You may want to check into that.
Also, as a recommended change, I would use the larger icon for Opera, it matches the others better. Note that I used the base DSL 0.8.2 for this, and
included the extensions in the root of the CD, including Abiword.dsl and Opera.uci. Other changes I made (remastered in) were for a larger font for the
icons, and a 800x600 .xserverrc (also mastered in), instead of the default 1024x768. I really didn't find where the DSL 0.8.2 has the default 1024x768 setup, so I overwrote that with a /home/dsl/.xserverrc via /etc/skel.
---
I use a rather large restoration tarball, so I come up to my desktop upon bootup. So what I have is a "little remastering" going on, but not much.
