My boys are always burning CD's, ripping discs, and doing things
that teenagers will do with their music..

They usually do it in XP..  it's easy, and its what their friends know how to use.

Of course, I show my boys how I do things in DSL.
They like DSL for browsing and streaming, but its no fun when it comes to
burning those cd's and rippin fat tracks with their friends..

So, here's one option...  K3b ..  It's colorful and easy to use.
Add the grip program, and you've got what you need....

I'm running it from a shell at the moment , to monitor errors.
It really, really wants a nice big KDE to run in..   no way !
This DSL session is running from the latest burn, from the .iso shown.

Need to keep trimming it , as it's a large extension right now.. (45MB)
But it WILL run in DSL..   that's the good news..

I would love to add this to mine.
Can you share a copy?

kent, your background is great. Is that a M$ theme?

and eeeeeeeeeeew at the losedows (windows) theme

I think I have enough screenshots posted here and elsewhere for folks to know
that I dont run DSL with a M$ theme..

But my sons friends are another matter..
Seeing the familiar "bliss" background and the icons on the desktop
just gives a feeling of familiarity to the desktop.
...  until you get up close and personal ...

So, the layout, while unappealing for most of us here,
does wonders for getting new folks to "grab the wheel" and
use the DSL desktop ..

Perhaps I should use a big "e" for the browser, a winamp icon for the xmms,
and the outlook icon for sylpheed .. The aterm icon is close enough ..
Rename scite to "notepad" ? Enable "hide" for the toobar and slit ?

OK , I'll stop now....  :)

Is K3b available as a .dsl?

changing names to the programs, changing icons to resemble more to winblows' ones..is no shame in my opinion. it's just a smart  way of getting kids (and..no kidding..we're not talking only about kids here..a lot of people go panic if you just change their wallpaper..) to know what elsewher they would never approach.

GOOD WORK! spread the revolution! :D

Hey, looks great!!  Where do I get the .dsl for k3b?

I've just started using dsl over windows.:blues:

Its not done yet.

Give poor Ke4nt1 a few more weeks to iron out some issues that he's getting because there is no KDE there.

Great!!

I'm looking forward to it.

in the meantime, try Gcombust.

It's a passable cd burning app.

passable, yes....it's actually preferred by some of us =o)
Posted by ico2 on Nov. 29 2004,15:01
i might have to grab both when k3b.dsl comes out and solve this petty squabble :)
Posted by mikshaw on Nov. 29 2004,17:56
I'm afraid a single person is unable to solve this particular squabble =o)

Some people, like myself, just don't like Qt applications, no matter how well written some of them may be.  I have the opinion that Qt applications take much too long to start up (unless you happen to be already running KDE), require too many external libs and programs, use too much RAM, and are just plain ugly....so I sometimes sacrifice features for the speed and size of Gtk/ncurses applications.
