xdesktopwaves.tar.gz
gnupg.dsl
k3b.dsl

before I purge the gtk, perl, python, and icons out of it .
That should get it down to around 25MB's+ )
It'll be worth it to have DVD-R Dual Layer support in DSL.. :)

12/05/2004

dsl-artwiz.tar.gz
( see info file for install instructions ) - in "testing" section

xdesktopwaves.tar.gz  ( updated w/ nice flua GUI controller + some presets )
( replaces earlier version - in "testing" section )

This ought to keep you entertained thru the holidays..  :)

kernelsource.dsl - the kernel sources used for DSL
(also needed when installing NVIDIA accelerated drivers )

XFree86.dsl - 4.3 version of XFree for DSL
(Thanks to Henk for the contribution, and SaidenUnleashed for offering
the XF86Config-4 files for ATI/Radeon and assistance in pre-testing)
So far, this works on my Compaq Presario 1640(synaptics touchpad WORKS! )
also, my toshiba laptop (1100cs) now works.
Henk mentioned running FooBilliard with this server in DSL.
I have verified Frozen-bubble, and StarCraft under Wine..

I have also installed the NVidia Accelerated drivers on top of this,
and they work fine business in DSL -

Seasons Greetings.

hmmmmmm, i might have to get the 25mb version of k3b when it is finished :)
Posted by zmef420 on Dec. 08 2004,04:42
ke4nt1, i have used k3b on 3 hd installs and it ran great on all. i just used it to copy an iso on cdr, not audio cd. a gui burning program is a must for many desktop users. i also like qtparted, works great too. thanks man.
Posted by ke4nt1 on Dec. 08 2004,05:12
Thanks for the feedback..
Much appreciated..

My kids think it rocks for making audio discs
and playable cdr's from mp3 sources ..

K3b works great on the boxes i've tried it on, as long as the box has at least 192mb of ram.  256 works better, but just 128 gets slow, and sometimes i get buggy cds.

would k3b work in uci form? might be a nice solution for low-RAMers.

Hi,

Is there a DSL extension of VIM?
I could not find it so far...

Seasons Greetings!

Thanks for DSL extensions!

Posted by softgun on Dec. 22 2004,10:49
K3B is great! Even the fat version is fine.
It can sit in the optional directory in the CDRW
I like the use when you want way of doing things. It Keeps the DSL spirit of small and fast.
I have a CD I can run on an old machine, but pull out the big ones if I am on a power machine!

A note about the artwiz fonts:
When using that xset command, my cursor set changed...I have no idea why.  But I'm not complaining.  The new cursor rocks.

Vim is already in DSL.

Just one comment on fluxbox0.9.11 (which I've had no troubles at all with yet, it totally rocks!), is that the new theme (by mikshaw maybe?  dsl-mik?) gets lost when you change themes, as it's not in the styles list, 'cause it's located in something like /opt/fluxbox/share?  (found it last night, not booted with DSL at the moment so can't remember exactly where it is...)
Nice theme, BTW.

Oh, how about making menu alpha maybe 220-230 by default, just to add a subtle reminder that it's there?  Or is there an issue with older hardware (I haven't tried it on any of my older stuff yet)?

And cut the virtual desktops back down to 3 (currently 4, causes them to stack in two rows).

And... (just kidding, that's it :p )

Posted by SaidinUnleashed on Dec. 22 2004,21:54
vim is still there in DSL proper.
Posted by ico2 on Dec. 22 2004,23:06
aaaaaaaaarg, this thread keeps moving, hard to keep up with finding the announcements.
Posted by mikshaw on Dec. 23 2004,05:25
"the new theme gets lost when you change themes"
Yeah...I suppose I could have put it into ~/.fluxbox/styles, but that didn't cross my mind.
You can get it back with the 'SetStyle' command, added to your menu, keys, or typed into command dialog: "setstyle  /opt/fluxbox-0.9.11/share/fluxbox/styles/dsl-mik".
Or you can copy/link the file into ~/.fluxbox/styles to have it come up under styles in the menu.

"how about making menu alpha maybe 220-230 by default, just to add a subtle reminder that it's there?  Or is there an issue with older hardware"
That's the reason.  I don't know how much of a difference it makes, but I thought it would be best to have no transparency as the default just in case, particularly since it has become so easy to change through the menu.

"And cut the virtual desktops back down to 3 (currently 4, causes them to stack in two rows)."
Are you talking about the pager?  I had no idea, since I don't use a pager myself.  Next release will be 3 desktops (does anyone even regularly use 4 workspaces?).

Ho,Ho,HO !!! - Merry Christmas !

kernelsources.dsl - for building drivers , and other good things.

XFree86.dsl - READ INFO FILE BEFORE USING

Both are in the "testing" section of the repository...  enjoy
( refresh your browser cache if it does not show in the list
   - usually shift-refresh does it )

You can always bootup a knoppix 5-17-2004 CD ,
and copy the XF86Config file it creates to get you started..

Seasons Greetings and Merry Christmas

actually, I believe that the latest Knoppix uses the same version of Xfree, so the XF86Config from it should work as well.

I'd test it from Live-CD first though.

NVidia.dsl for DSL
Use this with your working XFree86 setup and an NVidia card for
3d performance..
Read the .info file for proper usage, or the NVidia website for more info
on editing your XF86Config-4 file to use this.

It is in the "testing" area

You may want to mention in the XFree info that .xserverrc needs to be executable.  It took me a while to figure out why my rc file kept getting overwritten until I looked into startx to see that it falls back on xsetup.sh if it can't execute .xserverrc.  The example file included with the extension is not executable.
That said, I spent about an hour trying to get this going.  I got as far as the nvidia logo before it knocked me back to console with no (EE) messages...so I don't have a clue what I need to change in XF86config

It may be the fact that I installed both extensions without first getting XF86 running properly....that's something to check tomorrow.

Posted by ke4nt1 on Dec. 27 2004,04:20
Tnx for the heads-up..
I did re-upload the XFree86.dsl,
with the .xserverrc_for_XF86 written as executable...

I have my own packages to add to the Holiday Cheer. I have updated Skype and AMSN to the latest versions. Who gets them so they go in the Repository? (  ???  Its been some time)
Posted by ke4nt1 on Dec. 27 2004,07:30
tecker:

email them as attachments to:
extensions [at] damnsmalllinux [dot] org

include your updated .info file and fresh md5.txt with your extension.

getting XF86 and nvidia was simple once I did them in the correct order...took only a few minutes to get it going.  I wonder if it will be problematic to load the extensions at boot time, since I had to get XF86 running vesa first, and then install nvidia.  Does the nvidia extension overwrite some files found in XF86?

I've been wanting to make an extension for Wings3D.  Unfortunately it uses erlang, which itself is 4x the size of Wings, bringing the size of an extension to something like 10mb...not counting whatever other libs are required.

By the way, has anyone tried mplayer with the nvidia driver yet?  It only just occurred to me, but it might just go fullscreen now....I gotta check it....

xfree86 and nvidia.dsl work brilliantly for me, (mx 420)
however when i try and load tux racer it boots me out of x with a fatal error. Has anyone else had this problem?

-edit-
ok it loads now, but with 0.25 fps.
is it unrealistic to expect a game like this to run well on older hardware?
P2 350 Mhz, 192 mb ram, nividia mx 420.

Posted by ke4nt1 on Dec. 27 2004,16:57
mikshaw..

The NVidia does use it's own version of GL, so yes, there are some files and symlinks that are replaced.

For autobooting the extensions, I renamed my nvidia.dsl to
znvidia.dsl, making it load last before backup.tar.gz

I keep my XF86Config-4 file in my backup, and it is already
edited for use with NVidia. A proper .xserverrc is in my backup as well.

This boots into the accelerated mode automatically for me.

ninja:
check your symlinks for proper pointing to the libGL.so.1.0.6111 files.
I get 130+ FPS in Quake3 , and similar speed in both
Unreal Tournament 2003 and TuxRacer.
P3 - 1077MHz - mx400 NVidia card

The .25 fps sounds like your running with only the XFree86
version of GL.

I tried that, and it doesn't work for me.  It seems like I have to install Xfree86, startx with the vesa configs, and then install the nvidia driver and switch the configs.
It's as if Xfree is doing some additional configuration at runtime which doesn't work if nvidia is already installed.  I had no trouble with the method I described above, but using your method I get an error concerning the keyboard configuration and the xserver halts.

It may have something to do with my backup.tar.gz, although the only files in it are some applications, personal settings, and a couple of extra libs (installed into /opt)...nothing affecting the base system.

Posted by ke4nt1 on Dec. 28 2004,04:06
I'll continue to test here on several boxes, but for now,
with the (1) XF86Config-4 (already setup for NVidia) ,
and the (2) .xserverrc files in my backup.tar.gz,
having the XFree86.dsl and the z_nvidia.dsl in the root of my "mydsl" partition,
I get full accelerated Xserver from bootup.

I start my box from poorman's ( or liveCD ) like this.
dsl dma toram fromhd=/dev/hda3 mydsl=hdb3 restore=hdb3

As soon as I hit the desktop, I can bootup Unreal Tournament, and frag away.

I do have the files lib/modules/2.4.26/modules.dep and modules.generic_string
in my backup and writable, but I thought those were for my initial
compile when I was installing the NVidia drivers...   I'll check ..

My problem seems to be the fluxbox-0.9.11 extension.  It works with Xfree86, but fails after installing the nvidia driver.  If I go back to fluxbox stable with nvidia it loads fine.

When compiling fluxbox 0.9.11 I disabled xft and randr.  I'll try recompiling with these enabled and include the extra libs if necessary.  I can't think of any other reason it would fail to load.

Posted by ke4nt1 on Dec. 28 2004,06:19

( It's even better with Nvidia drivers installed.. )

Brilliant stuff coming to DSL these days, kudos to all contributors!
However, what with the recent .dsl dependency problems, I think it's time to add more detail to the mydsl click and load applet to notify users of dependencies of these hungry apps.

2 cents

Posted by ke4nt1 on Dec. 30 2004,07:13
Any dependencies outside the .dsl itself that are needed are typically
noted in the .info file that shows more details about the program or app.
It also shows who contributed the extension,
and gives credit to the author of the code.

If you find an extension that has needs ( other extensions loaded ) ,
and is NOT listed in the .info file, throw a note my way - PM or email,
and I'll deal with it promptly.
( with almost 250 extensions, and dozens of new ones every month,
there is no doubt I may have missed a few..)

The .info file can be found in the myDSL click-n-load app by
clicking on the FILENAME you are interested in.

More detail about each of the extensions can be found in the repository,
such as filesizes, and md5sums.

hi there ! i'm very glad about the XFree - mplayer thing. But i can't get it running. i have an epia mII6000 board and when i have installed the package, edited the 2 files, tried to start the server again i get the grey-mouse-x-screen and it stays frozen. Did I forget any commands or is the board to blame ? Any suggestions ? thx ia

haaaaaaaaaaa ! i've got it running ! i don't know how i did it, but it works.very cool.

now i would like to configure mplayer with the driver for my video accelerator. Could you give me a hint, with which options you configured mplayer ?
