Opera7.54 at last! Installs, configures perfectly, loads up in same time as Firefox and is a lot more accessible to me (I also use Win98 version). Mail client works well, nice GUI and just what I wanted. Note making mini editor too. All under the same roof. BRILLIANT. Thanks a lot chaps.(1996 Digital Hinote notebook 133mhz, 40mb ram, 12.5" TFT at 800x600 res.) mmm..., have had to stop using this for E-mail as the function for saving text attachments doesn't seem to work properly. Both .RTF and .DOC file types attchments are saved to /home/dsl/ but are corrupted to leave nothing but question marks when opened in Abiword. All other e-mail programmes I have used on this machine can save attachments OK. Any ideas? I was wondering if it is an overzealous security setting somewhere. Posted by softgun on Jan. 12 2005,17:52
Why are there both tar.gz. and .dsl extensions. i read that .dsl are the tar.gz files with the extension renamed .dslIsn't it less confusing if we stick to one of these? Is it possible to make Scribus into a DSL or UCI? Which is easier? Scribus is not available as a deb as far as i know. Posted by ke4nt1 on Jan. 12 2005,18:37
Search the forums for ...." .dsl AND .tar.gz " Here's a thread to start.. < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin.....tar.gz > ..and for scribus, here are some other threads/discussions < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....bcd6b05 > 73 ke4nt Posted by mikshaw on Jan. 12 2005,18:40
I'm going to try to answer this before Kent sees it.... The extension's extensions are different because of the way they are installed. The mydsl-install script checks the extension to decide whether or not to run mkwriteable first (opens up more of the system for writing). If the extension is *tar.gz, mkwritable is not run, and the package is limited to writing in /opt, /tmp, and /home. This saves precious memory usage and prevents overwriting of vital system files. //begin EDIT Dang....still too slow. //end EDIT Posted by vabene04 on Jan. 12 2005,18:41
scribus works fine under debian. I work with it in my dsl. Have a look at debian.org(packages). But its hard to install the new version 1.20 it, you need a lot of files (libs, ghostscript, etc...) and get a lot of errors and problems...

mikshaw..Yours was better... Kent Posted by softgun on Jan. 13 2005,03:06
Thanks mikshaw, I understand. I also realised that Scribus has a LOT of dependencies. To make a scribus.dsl will be a lot of work. It is available in Knoppix. I now understand that as far as the live CD is concerned, to preserve memory/resources the best/efficient is .uci tar.gz dsl in that order. Thanks everyone! Now to make my own extensions - starting small of course. It will be nice if someone does a how to do this with a real application as an example. I will start searching first :-) A real example is worth a thousand descriptions.... Posted by mikshaw on Jan. 13 2005,03:25
Thanks, softgun, that's a good idea. I've been working on a howto for tar.gz extensions over the last few days, and I like your idea of using a real example instead of /opt/something/bin/something

I am glad that you think so. The nice thing here is that we do it and end up with something that works! Gives one a sense of accomplishement and the thrill of viictory:-) Posted by ke4nt1 on Jan. 15 2005,17:38
