I would really like to make an extension for the XFCE Window Manager.

Does anybody know how tricky this would be, and is there a How-To for making extensions to DSL?

Look in the repository. It is already done I think, There is an offshoot of DSL called Luit Linux which uses xfce instead of fluxbox.
