Uninstall a dsl extensionForum: myDSL Extensions (deprecated) Topic: Uninstall a dsl extension started by: ericd Posted by ericd on Feb. 26 2005,20:04
Hello everybody,Is there a way to uninstall a dsl extension ? I installed dsl on my HD. It's wonderful, but I try every extensions and I had to re-install in order to get a clean system ... Thanks Eric Posted by tronik on Feb. 27 2005,07:09
Use 'apt-get' to install things on an hdinstall. Google apt-get help or use the forum search to learn how to use it.myDSL Extensions are mostly for LiveCD users...or users who do not with cluttering their filesystems with things they can't remove easily =) Posted by ericd on Feb. 27 2005,10:25
Ok I will try it on one of the computer with an internet connection. But I got 2 others computers without any connection. I think I can't use apt-get on them ? So I have to use the mydsl ? Or I can download packages .deb on another computer and install it ?I will have a look at this command apt-get. I think It take care of depencies, I come from mandrake world and I only know the rpm system. Thanks for reply. Eric Posted by cbagger01 on Feb. 28 2005,04:37
Use:sudo su dpkg -i name_of_debfile_i386.deb dpkg -i name_of_next_debfile.deb ...etc exit exit Posted by ericd on Feb. 28 2005,06:27
Ok I tried it, I read a lot about apt-get, dpkg, (I'm ready for the exam now ;)) So I download a blabla.deb and tried dpkg -i blabla.deb.So I went into the worlds of dependencies ! It's a endless work no ? With a computer without connection nor cd of .deb, it's difficult. Or there is a way to know all the depencies I will need when downloading a .deb from the net on my other computer ? I think I'm not in the good forum now, I will go in the apt-get one ;) Thanks a lot Eric Posted by RoGuE_StreaK on Feb. 28 2005,06:51
I'm wondering if it could be possible, especially for liveCD and frugal, to somehow make a list of files installed when you install a dsl or tar.gz, leaving them off the list if they over-write an existing file, and then an uninstall option that rm's the files in that list? This way no core files will be removed, as they could be if you simply made a list of the extension contents and then rm'd those files. A simple(?) check of file over-write would also mean that if you install multiple extensions, and some of their files are shared, removing one wouldn't effect the other, as the over-written files wouldn't be on the list, as long as you remove them in the reverse order of installation? So if you load an extension and then, after doing whatever you wanted to do with it, decide you want to free up ram space, you could remove it from the ram drive. Of course, if an extension hoses the system, rm'ing the extension wouldn't repair the hosed core files, but it's better than nothing? Recapping in a nutshell: On install of extension, check if the extracted file overwrites an existing file, if so, fine, if not, add it to an uninstall list for that extension. To uninstall, select the original extension in emelfm, click a "unload mydsl" button, which will check the corresponding filelist, and rm said files. But I don't know what happens on file-overwrite, whether you could write a sript depending on it, so... Posted by cbagger01 on Feb. 28 2005,17:11
You can find the dependencies for official Debian packages by looking here:< http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages > Posted by ericd on Mar. 01 2005,06:59
Thank you, I will study that. Is it normal that when I install ted + dslpkg + gnuutils + rox + abiword, flfm doesn't work any more ? Should I opee a new topic or is there any obvious incompatibilty ? Eric Posted by joer on Mar. 01 2005,14:41
That is why I prefer UCI not only uses less ram, you don't have library collisions. This makes me think of M$ dll hell, seems some combination of dsl's suffer the same thing? If I could just figure out how do make them. Or convince others to make more UCI extensions. Posted by cbagger01 on Mar. 01 2005,17:33
dsk-dpkg and gnu-utils should not conflict with each other.rox does update some libraries that are needed for the program. Check out the *.info file for more information. I doubt that ted is a problem because it used to be part of the base distro, so this leaves: rox + abiword as a "gotcha" Try isolating each one and see if the problem goes away. I think I installed 10 times dsl the last 3 days, so I'll take a few days off ;) I made a clean hd install and only put dpkg and gnu-utils. I will try now to use the .deb in order to have a better control and to be able to install and desinstall...I gave up abiword, my computer is not fast enough, I will try PW because ted doesn't have a toolbar and the kids love toolbars... I gave up rox too, I will try flfm So let's go for a .deb search ! Thanks for help Eric Posted by cbagger01 on Mar. 01 2005,23:47
PW has a nice user interface for such a slimmed-down application that runs well on older computers.Unfortunately, DSL users have reported that it crashes when they use it. Your experience may be different, though. The cut-and-paste menu items and buttons do not work in PW, but you can cut and paste using the Linux clipboard approach of "highlight the source text and then press the middle mouse button or scrollwheel button to paste in the destination. FLWriter in DSL version 0.9.3 also seems like a nice editor with a decent user interface so you should give it a try. Another possibility is to use a text editor instead of a word processor. I think that Nedit is a nice enough text editor that you could use it as a simple word processor and it runs fine on older computers. Good Luck. Posted by ericd on Mar. 02 2005,22:49
Ok, , I did it and I got a segmentation fault for PW... With apt-get I could cleanly remove it.FLWriter is very nice, but can't read .rtf file, and we receive file from the microsoft world. I can ask paople to convert them in .rtf so I was looking for a word processor who could do it. Abiword seems to be good but it is too heavy for our computer... Nedit is not really what I'm looking for. So I will look for another simple rtf editor ! Thanks for the help Eric PS : now I know how to configure a local source for apt-get and how to use it ! Thanks DSL ! Posted by geodescent on Mar. 08 2005,04:23
So there's no way to uninstall AYTTM2 using apt-get? I cannot get it or DPKG to find the package, though it seems obvious at this point that it's GOOD that dpkg can't find it. :PI ask because ayttm won't work with yahoo, and then I just used YMess instead. Now I have no need for ayttm since I rarely use MSN and it should be against the law to connect to AOL over a linux box, but that's my opinion. One bonus question, is there a way to monitor laptop battery status on an HD install of dsl? Thanks! -geodescent (dillo doesn't work when logging in) |
