hardware accelerated scaling for video playbackForum: myDSL Extensions (deprecated) Topic: hardware accelerated scaling for video playback started by: I went to bed very late Posted by I went to bed very late on Mar. 17 2005,19:02
Hello, I have a problem with video scaling on my dsl.I use dsa 0.9.2, Xine.dsl and xfree86 (xfree86.dsl). I want to watch a video on my machine (Cx/IBM166+, Matrox Millenium 4MB PCI). Using the original resolution (128x104)the CPU load is about 75%. When I resize the xine window, e.g. to 256x208 the CPU is at (over) full load and not able to present the video without stuttering. It seems I need a 2GHZ CPU to watch a video in fullscreen which has a resolution of 128x104. On other systems (win xp) the CPU load does not raise when the video window is beeing resized. What to do? You need a video card driver that supports hardware acceleration. It's likely that whatever is included with DSL is not going to do it.It would also help a LOT to pay 5 bucks for a newer video card. Posted by I went to bed very late on Mar. 18 2005,17:30
I thought the millenium is a card which supports hardware scaling. So I am going to buy a Geforce1-SDR256. What do you think about it. I think the driver support is good for Geforce=<1. Posted by mikshaw on Mar. 18 2005,17:53
your card may support it, i was just saying you just need to make sure the driver you have actually uses it. It's like the nvidia drivers included with most distros... they are nearly worthless for any serious 3D stuff. I only suggested upgrading the card itself because 4mb makes me think it's ridiculously old, and you can get much better for only a few dollars. At least with the geforce you have a driver already made for DSL as an extension. Posted by cbagger01 on Mar. 18 2005,23:46
Luckily you shouldn't need 3d accel for 2d video.Of the available options, Nvidia is a good choice for a video card on a linux computer. If you wish, you can install the XFree86 and the Nvidia extension, but it uses more RAM than the builtin Xvesa server. FYI, for video XVesa is usually better than Xfbdev |
