With a HD-install of DSL 1.1, I was working with Firefox 1.0.4 and some other applications (apt-get). Now I wanted to download Java Runtime by using myDSL to use it with Firefox. I clicked on "myDSL->System->jre1_5_0.tar.gz" (29mb). Instantly after Java was installed automatically, the windows of myDSL were blanked (no apps were shown anymore). And I had to recognize that emelFM, Firefox, and some other applications do not work anymore! After trying an application the icon disappears from desktop! Dillo 0.8.3 and Endeavour Mark II still work, but most other programs are gone. What can I do? Why did this happen? I just installed the myDSL extension jre1_5_0.tar.gz. When opening emelFM it says: "...directory not found.." This is a serious problem! Hopefully someone knows what the reason could be.

Hi
The only time I had a similar problem I had downloaded and install several large .dsl extensions.  If I remember correctly I was running a frugal install of DSL.  To make a long story short the ramdisk filled up while installing the last extension.  Not only did the new extension not work almost everything went junk including the desktop icons.  If you can get a shell running check for free disk space.

df -h

The only mountpoint that should be 100% used is /KNOPPIX.  If you can delete enough stuff and reboot most stuff will work again.  You will probably have to reinstall though.

good luck

Yes indeed, this is exactly my problem! Thanks for "df -h"! Disk usage was 100%
The reason is found, but the applications do not start anymore, so I will backup everything (with the help of Endeavour2, this works fortunately) and install DSL 1.2.1, now.

Important: emelFM, rox filer, endeavour2, etc. should show the disk usage and free disk space in the status bar like the MS Explorer does! But this concerns those programs, not DSL

Much more important: DSL needs to have a program, script or plug-in that shows a message when disk is getting filled up (like on Windows)! When xy% are reached, the message should appear. Furthermore there should pop up a message when something will not fit on a floppy or usb drive, too! I have a "128mb" usb stick (in reality only 127,85x,... or something) and I had a file that was some bytes too big, so the file on usb stick finally was defect! The system should tell me that a file is too big for a disk, floppy, or whatever!

PS.: I did a test and moved a file with 128,000,000 bytes to my usb stick. It was deleted from HD and was only on usb, but incomplete and unusable! A message would be enough, a blockade of moving by the system even better!

Hmm I have a problem with java myself =/ I don't have DSL installed on my hard drive, but when I do try to run Java, the whole system freezes up and I have to actually unplug my computer because even the power button won't respond. :D  Ehehe...
