So i used the MyDSL Extension Panel and I could choose System, then gcc1.dsl because I need the make command.  I begin downloading it to the temp directory.  Then once its done and opening, I get this error pop-up!  It says "Alert", has a blue exclamation mark inside a white box, and "OK".  No error message with it!!  :(

Then I can't open up ANY of my applications installed!! Not even the Xterminal!!  I can't even reboot!!  I hit alt ctrl delete and begin the shutdown command, but it says something about not being able to find "knoppix-reboot" or something and hangs there.

So then I unplug the power from my laptop and reboot.  I download the file and through Emeflm I click on MyDSL so it would install.  Then it starts giving me a TON of error messages and again, read the paragraph above this one.

WTF is up?!  If you want I can get the error messages.

I take it you are running from a live-cd or frugal?

you might be running out of ram space. gcc1.dsl is a VERY large extension.

yeah i did a frugal install.  i assume i should've done a different one?

sorry for the noobness.  :(   i only saw a guide for the frugal install.

is there a command for a different installation method?

What are you wanting yo compile/install?

Odds are, we already have a mydsl package for it.

i don't understand.  i want to install the gcc1.dsl package for the make command.   i also need to install the alsa package for audio support.  and dpkg for apt-get.

i assume i can't install these packages because of the frugal install i did or something.  how can i install them to the hard drive?

gcc1.dsl is a large extension and should only be installed to a frugal system if you have a large amount of RAM (128MB) and/or a swap partition or swapfile.

Otherwise, if you are limited in RAM you can do a regular HD install (instead of frugal install) and then gcc1.dsl should work fine because it will be saved to your hard drive instead of to your RAMdisk.

btw, one more question.  i thought i might stick this here and not start a new thread.

Makefile:8: /lib/modules/2.4.26/build/.config: No such file or directory
make: *** No rule to make target `/lib/modules/2.4.26/build/.config'.  Stop.

i get this error when running the make command.  do i have to link anything?  when i go to /lib/modules/2.4.26, i see build, but its a file, not a directory it seems.  how can i fix this error?

Hi there!

Just look a bit harder at that error message: ".config" is the file that's not been found! ;)

It would hold the build options of the running kernel.

Maybe you can copy it from /boot or if you installed kernel sources try running "make oldconfig" in /usr/src/linux-[kernel-version]
