Counterfeit Cruzer Mini 1GForum: USB booting Topic: Counterfeit Cruzer Mini 1G started by: Carey Posted by Carey on Dec. 28 2005,14:39
I bought a Cruzer Mini 1G, which appeared to work fine. I did the pendrive zip install, and that went fine. I tried to do a pendrive HDD install, and that failed saying it couldn't partition the drive, or some such. Upon investigation, and after calling SanDisk (who were great, by the way), it turns out the serial number doesn't even exist. SanDisk tells me these 1G drives are showing up lots now, so beware.sfdisk tells me the drive is 1099GB - cool, eh? I can't seem to partition the drive correctly with the HP tool, XP, or sfdisk, but I can fake it out by creating a large partition at the beginning of the drive. XP sees the drive, the large partition, and tells me I still have almost a terabyte hanging off the back. I'm returning the drive, but you guys should beware. Your first clue will be that, when in Windows, you don't see the free trial software on the pendrive. Posted by Alucard_The_Dex on Jan. 03 2006,12:01
My First post I recently bought a Cruzer Micro 1 gig and a Cruzer mini 256MB. Both Have the Software upon them so im guessing im safe. May i ask where you bought this fake micro? And on another note may i ask you why the cruzer line is so popular withen linux? (which i am utterly new to in a sense) Everyone i have talked to seemed to own one. I bougth the Cruzer at a little store owned by a friend of mine. Let me tell you, he was pissed! My guess on why the product is so popular with the Linux crowd is that it's the best bang for the buck in a reputable name. Either that, or they were the first out with a big drive. However, I replaced mine with a Kingston Data Traveller for less money than a new Sandisk Cruzer. Hmm Odd Did it come in a Actual cruzer micro plastic package?Understandable I personaly bought my 1gig for its price after rebates 50$American. I know the name sandisk very well yet i know little of them. Im wondering just how good they are if their products are that easily spoofed and sold. Other then that im pretty happy with both of mine. I formated um into fat32 and thy work perfect. Posted by Carey on Jan. 03 2006,16:14
It did appear to be an actual SanDisk package, but when I came to open the thing, it seemed to have been super-glued rather than heat sealed. Why all the curiosity? Posted by Alucard_The_Dex on Jan. 03 2006,16:35
oddness once moreEh honestly i bought without thinking and now im wondering if i made a mistake. With that i also need to learn about brand names, i honestly have no clue about any for any computer part. |
