Hi.

I'd like to put DSL on my thumb drive. A few questions:

  • Do I have to format the drive? Can I keep other files on my flash drive while DSL is on it?
  • Can I install the DSL files onto the thumb drive from within Windows?

Here's what the FAQ said:

First, boot up your computer from the DSL livecd, frugal, or USB-frugal. Note that it is not possible to do a USB install, or any other kind of install from a DSL Embedded system.

In that case, do I need to download DSL, put it on a CD, and then install it to the thumb drive from within DSL? Isn't there any other way to do it?

Thanks.

Yes.  You need to download DSL, put it on a CD, and install it to the thumb drive from within DSL.

There is another way to do it.  You can buy a pre-loaded thumb drive from the store.

To further expand on this theme, the line you quoted from the FAQ expressly dictates which versions allow you to do this:

< livecd >
< frugal >
< USB-frugal >

However, you cannot use the embedded version as it runs under emulation on another OS.

I hope this clarification helps, if you can think of another way to phrase the answer that would be more descriptive to people who are having difficulty understanding the answer, such as you have had, please share it with the documentation maintainers.
