it may sound like a silly question, but i just want to confirm if this is possible: can i burn the iso of DSL onto the thumbdrive directly like using a tool from some website?thanks! Posted by Breadman on Jan. 12 2006,16:14
Generally speaking: yes! You only need to download the necessary files (e.g. an .iso-file).If your are using windows i should be easy: 1) download .iso-file 2) make it a virtual drive 3) create a master boot record on the usb-stick (format it and use syslinux to create a file "idlinux" on the stick) 4) set volume to FAT16 (winXP professional has tools, otherwise you can use the DSL live CD) 5) Copy the data from the virtual drive onto the stick (maybe you hasve to cut the files from ?:\boot\isolinux directly to ?:\ with ?:\ being your stick) When you now reboot your machine (and be sure USB-booting is activated) it should work. Maybe you have to try whether it is an USB-ZIP or an USB-HDD. Thats it! BTW: its much easier to burn the .iso-file onto cd to create an dsl-live cd and then use these tools to create a usb-zip. Thats no difference... Breadman < www.bread-n-linux.de.vu > |
