No its not the only way.
Other ways:

1. download dsl-embedded
   unzip onto an exisintg pendrive
   a) run it from within windows
   b) apply syslinux to make it bootable, if not already, and see if you are lucky
   c) or download the bootfloppy-usb and use it to boot from pendrive.
2. download dsl-vmx version, you need to install VMware player or workstation. With this you can actually install to a pendrive.

You need to search these forums and read because ALL of this has been posted before!

hi, with options 1 , b, c   no luck here
a , i could tried with the qm in windows, but  i wanted to install to a pendrive (now that i tried and liked)

option 2, the wmware player, i wright "install" , it take me to a nš of options    "dsl install options"   ,
i choose  " 7   - usb pendrive hdd boot install"  ,because in my computer setup page besides cd-rom and floppy , theres only usb-hdd  boot option

now the instalation ask me  enter a  device name of pendrive , i wright "dsl"  ..i also tried just f: cus is the letter of the pendrive

then ask if its instalation or upgrade ..i choose instalation

then .. to use the dsl iso from livecd, file, or web    .., first i choose file and enter the location where i put the dsl iso from the vmx zip version i downloaded  "c:\dsl-2.0.iso"
..its says not found  , instalation not sucessful

i tried  continue instalation ..now form the livecd option , even if im using vmware player and dsl vmz version , but it ends up sayng error mounting usb drive..

any help on this, anyone tried installing using this vmware player?       the correct option in the instalation is choosing from the (f)ile option , right? ..but says " c:dsl-2.0.iso" not found  ..and without the \

@roberts (or any good willing person), can you expand that  or provide link?
How do you apply syslinux to the embedded image?

You don't apply to the embedded image but to the pendrive, if needed. Many time just unzip to pendrive and it will work.
If not you can try to apply syslinux. I wrote about this < here >
