Save installed apps?

I've downloaded openoffice thru myDSL, when i reboot, the .tar.gz file is there (cause i saved it to home directory), but the icons and usable files aren't.

How do I either -
reinstall openoffice usin the .tar.gz file when i boot,
or keep it installed so its ready to use every time i boot?

Open emelfm

Highlight the file.

Press the "Mydsl" button inside the emelfm window.

To get it to be ready-to-use, you can create a new directory called

/optional

that should be located inside your mydsl directory.

Then copy the file into the /optional directory.

When you reboot, you will have an optional menu as part of your fluxbox mydsl menu. Choose OpenOffice and a few seconds later you will have the icons without the need to go into Emelfm.

I would not suggest to save extensions in your home directory.
Since this post is under pendrive, it is even more important not to do so.

Extensions are large and static, i.e, they do not change.
Normal operating procedures imply that all files in your home
dir will be in the backup/restore procedure.

This then would imply the heavy writing and reading to the
pendrive would occur with the extensions located there.
You could of course add them to the .xfiletool.lst but this just complicates things.

By design, it is preferred to save desired extensions to /cdrom
This is the root writeable mountpoint for the pendrives and
frugal type installs.

So as root copy the extension to /cdrom and
optionally create an optional directory there as well.

This then would mean write once, read many, and this means
much less wear on the pendrive as well as keeping the
backup/restore to a minimum and uncomplicated.

If you should be running a USB-ZIP type pendrive, then you
may well not have enought space on /cdrom
With this type of install it ispreferred to use sda2 the
remaining partition for extensions and use the boot option mydsl=sda2
