Knoppix file for boot and embedded

I tried DSL out from a Linux Format dvd and really liked it.  So I am trying to install both usb-hdd and embedded on a pendrive.  But I'm getting some odd results.

a)  I installed to usb pendrive from livecd (iso from Linux Format dvd) and was able to boot into DSL from pendrive.

b)  I added additional "embedded" files from zip file on Linux Format dvd (swapping syslinux.cfg files as described elsewhere in this forum).  I could still boot from pendrive but when I tried to run under qemu, the KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX filesystem could not be found.

c) I copied over all "embedded" files from the dvd zip file, overwriting the livecd files (but still keeping both syslinux.cfg files) and could run in qemu but could not boot (hangs trying to read the knoppix filesystem).

I can swap backwards and forwards but can only run in one mode at a time.

So are there different versions of the knoppix file (seems unlikely) or is this a problem with the Linux Format dvd (hope not as I don't have a handy fast download)?

Grateful for any hints.

I only create one KNOPPIX image for all official types of DSL. The boot file minitr24.gz does differ, ie, boot.img in syslinux, or search boot device order.

OK.  Well I've got a work around by installing the embedded version in a different folder.  But I think I must be installing twice as many files as I need.  I'll try playing with minitr24.gz.

Thanks

Got it.  I needed the two different minirt24.gz files.  So I renamed the "embeded" file and edited the bat and sh files to point to the new file name. Thanks for the help.

keithw,

If you are successful in installing the needed files to run DSL in he embedded mode and also to boot from a USB drive, could you put in a HOWTO here or at least explain where the different minirt24.gz go?

Thanks,

Actually I've just found a thread < here > that suggests you can boot from a pendrive as long as dsl-embedded is working on it.  That's not how I did it though.

My steps were:
1.  Unzip the Embedded zip file into the pendrive.  Rename minirt24.gz to minirt241.gz.
2. Boot Livecd and choose install to pendrive USB-HDD from the menu.  When propmpted, pick Update so that files are overwritten but the drive is not reformatted.
3.  Edit dsl-windows.dat and dsl-linux.sh to change references to minirt24.gz to minirt241.gz.
4.  I then used < these instructions > to ensure the correct syslinux.cfg is read each time.

I'm sure there are better ways and I still haven't sorted out how to share files between embedded and bootable but hope this helps.
