Hello All,
I installed dsl to a usb drive when I boot up it brings me to the boot screen (Where you can enter boot options).  If I just hit enter my screen goes blank and nothing happens.  However, if I use the boot option vga=normal I get the following...

Code Sample

Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel
//Then some other post stuff, but then I get
...
Code: Bad EIP value.
<0>Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

and then it just hangs.  I am using a dell inspiration d810 laptop.  Could it be the format in which I installed the os (usb-zip vs. usb-hdd)?  Do I need to enter a different boot option?
Thanks,
Matt

Wow, i just saw that error on a old machine i'm trying get back in working order. In my case it was caused by bad ram. do you have any live cd's with memtest? i used my ubuntu live cd to check mine.

What should I be looking for?  Would it work if I ran ubuntu live memtest in VMserver?  What do you mean bad ram?  The machine is my work comp and all should be in order...

same deal with 'boot> dsl acpi=off' (without boot option i get a blank screen - no penguin in the top left)

i have a dell lattitude d610

boot failsafe seems to be the only option that works for this laptop and my dell poweredge 400sc desktop.

i should mention that sometimes with boot option 'expert' it drops me into a limeted shell with a list of about 15 usable commands.

I also have a Dell Latitude 610 that gets the exact same error message.
I will try the noacpi option next (see former post).
This has happened to me on several different computers and different versions of linux.  What hardware incompatibility exists that makes this happen?
