After booting up the live cd, I choose the menu option for installing to usb-hdd
After answering the installation questions, the installation fails with errors like-
/dev/sda - no such device or address
/dev/sda1 - no such device or address
/dev/sda1 is not a valid block device
error mounting usb device

PC is some type of dell, 2 yrs old.

Anyone help? I had a good look around forum but couldn't find anyone with same problem
thanks.

Sounds like theres no hd device there, or its not partitioned properly yet.

Yes, it's not recognising that there's a USB device connected. Presumably it's a memory stick you're trying - do you have another one? Can you confirm the one you are using works, perhaps from Windows?

Yes I have this issue also...the stick was new and the first install went well and rebooted...I added some .dsl's and all looked good until I shutdown...would not...guess was ramdisk issue not backed up

..booted winxp and reformatted pen but now when I attempt install it gives this error about unmountable block device and fdisk is unable to open it...it does work fine for win storage..thought it may be partition issue and came for help also..any hope for these pens?

2 yrs is not old!
have a look at your motherboard's bios settings. maybe some option needs to be turned on?

boot from cdrom.
open emelfm file manager. goto /mnt
plug in usb pen.
wait 20 secs.
a new device (/mnt/sd??) should show up.
