Does my bios have to actually say USB in the boot options?  It says something like "removable mass storage".
Gateway 200ARC laptop
Thanks...

I just rebooted and checked...it says "removable devices".  I have the boot sequence set to CD, then removable devices, then HD, the boot from LAN.

I booted DSL from livecd, partitioned the usb drive (256MB Dane Elec), then did a USB HDD Install using the usb install untility from the DSL menu.  Everything completed code zero ... yet when I reboot I get the USB lights flashing...then xp booting from my hard drive.  It's like it sees the USB and decides not to boot from it.

I'm missing something since when I did a straight HDD grub install from livecd I get similar observables.  install completed code zero, yet on reboot I'd only get as far as the "LI" in the upper left and the pc hangs.

any idea what i'm doing wrong with this usb install?

you can try the following;

- fiddling around with the bios, turning on/off usb settings.

- try booting off the CD with boot-line : fromhd = /dev/sda1
 and see if it loads the image from the usb drive.

- try the usb-zip install to see if the bios likes that.
