What I'd like to be able to do is the following:

-boot off the drive into DSL linux
-run a virus scan of the computer
-failing the above, copy the files from the hard drive onto the jump drive
-have the USB drive recognized by windows

The USB drive is a San Disk 1 Gb Micro that is compatible with w2k and "linux" according to the packaging. There's some San Disk proprietary software preinstalled on it. I can format the drive, but it shows as two drive letters, one being the San Disk software.

Currently, when I try to install to USB pen drive (a 1Gb San Disk Micro)from the live cd, I get an error mesage "not supported from syslinux cd". I know I need to format and partition the drive (cfdisk ?) but how to do so?

Try
sudo cfdisk /dev/sdX
where X is the letter corresponding to your usb drive.
