HD install on usb drive? Possible?

I have tried to install the livecd on my usb pen, i get it to boot fine, i press enter and it starts to load up but then it says it cannot find knoppix filesystem. Which is quite annoying. I have tried alsorts, changing filesystem, using the livecd using the embedded files etc.

I was wondering if it is possible to create a working HD installation by installing to a usb pen drive

Performing a traditional hard drive install to a pendrive would very quickly "wear out" the usb flash memory.
