I'm trying to boot DSL for the first time, on a system that I've never booted any other OS on yet. The whole process of formatting my thumb drive, installing DSL on it, etc. was pretty straightforward, as was getting my BIOS to boot from the USB drive.

My problem is that I get an essentially immediate failure booting DSL. It says:

Probing SCSI aic7xxxx.o

...and freezes. I've tried booting with both "dsl noscsi" (which skips the above, but fails to find the root device on the USB drive and drops me into a barely functional shell) and "dsl failsafe", which still tries the aformentioned SCSI scan.

One of the reasons I'm trying DSL on this system is that, for the time being, I have no CD and no hard disk. The FAQ indicates that I need a CD to boot; is that indeed the case, or could I get away without one given appropriate boot options?

Meanwhile, in case the hardware I'm using is relevant, here's the dmesg from another system running OpenBSD 4.0 on the same processor/motherboard/memory (not perfect, I know, but hopefully helpful; ignore the drives and the last two NICs, as they're not present on my DSL system):

How did you install it to your usb (step-by-step)?

Try to use "dsl noscsi failsafe" for now for your testing I suppose.
