I am in most respects new to this so forgive my ignorance with this question.

Instead of these step by step instructions to make a bootable USB flash memory with DSL, why not just ghost or image a successful DSL installation and provide access to the image?  Someone like me could then hopefully in one step mount that image to my USB flash memory.

Wondering??

Cheers

Not everyone has the same size USB flash device.

Yes, but a zipped install of the USB setup, with USB drivers
 available, like the boot disk.
Then you`d download, unzip, & copy it to the USB.
Then syslinux the USB to make it bootable.
That way you don`t have to burn a CD your not going to use.

Your description is close to the existing "5-way" download from the DSL web site.

The file that you are lookiing for is dsl-embedded.zip

The 5-way.tar.gz are the tools necessary for setup in Linux.

So download the dsl-embedded.zip, unzip & copy to USB
Then syslinux the USB and away you go!

Hate to bother you, but I thought DSL embedded was for running UNDER Win. only?
Please tell me I`m wrong!    Or...  you just did didn`t you?

cbagger told you. I have told you, and Saidin Unleashed told you.

You say it is not newbie friendly.
Well guess what...

Use your own instructions that you posted.
Download, unzip, copy to USB, syslinux it make it bootable. No cdrom required.

dsl-embedded.zip can be booted 5 ways.

1. from BIOS via Syslinux
2. from Qemu via Windows
3. from Qemu via Linux
4. from a boot floppy
5. from booting from a DSL cdrom

It is not just for windows!

I presume u are using windows

You first go download syslinux...

Install it to the disired directory...

Open DOSb-box...Start>Run>
Win 2000+xp = cmd
Win95+98+ne = command

goto the syslinux dir

type:
syslinux.exe -s -f x: (where x stands for the desired target, your usb drive)

This information is available in this forum, and if you would had use a searchengine, you would probaly found it...

Regards,
Sebastian
