i've got the same problem with my lexar geyser 1GB. the first time it worked. then i tried knoppix 3.8. i don't know what i did wrong but since then i get the same message. have you been able to fix that yet or is there anyone else who could help us?

Maybe i should give you some more details.
i formatted the stick after i had 3.8 on it. then it gave me the message "invalid or damaged bootable partition". i thought i fixed it with some commands like dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda1 count=1 bs=512 and creating a new partition table with fdisk. when try to make create a new partition with n in fdisk it's recognized as unknown in qtparted. and when create a fat16 partition its not even recognized in fdisk. anyway, i did syslinux /dev... and put the files from boot.img on the stick. when i try to boot from the stick it hangs. when do fdisk on the stick after trying to boot, it tells me there are 4 non-linux damaged partitions on it. qtparted still recognizes either unknown or fat16. i used install-mbr too. nothing seems to help. is it possible to damage the mbr or whatever so bad, that the stick can't boot anymore ever?
please guys, i'm freakin' out here. what else can i do?

ok, now i can boot with grub. after loading the kernel anb booting it gives me:"unable to mount root fs on 01:01". thats the same message when i had knoppix 3.8 on the stick (without grub).
